From Morticians to Missionaries
Luke 24:8–9
I. Introduction
A. The Cross and its Results
1. The priests—rid of the One who spoke with such authority
2. The Pharisees—rid of Him whose life revealed their sin
3. The authorities—rid of the tumult with the people
4. Peter—boastful before, but broken now
5. Joseph of Arimathea—cowardly before, but courageous now
B. The Setting and the Scene, Impact upon the Women
1. The women make their way to the tomb to embalm the Lord’s body
2. The first day of the week, the Lord’s day
3. Very early in the morning, the first sunrise service
4. The stone rolled away, they had worried about the safekeeping of Jesus’ body
II. Body
A. The Women Remembered his Words (vv. 6–8)
1. The question, “Why seek ye the living among the dead?”
a. A good question for today
b. A good question for those with loved ones in heaven
2. He is not here!
a. Don’t look for the Savior in the cemetery
b. He lives. He is risen
c. “I am he that liveth and was dead and am alive again” (Rev. 1:18)
3. The great injunction: REMEMBER
a. Matthew 12:40; Matthew 20:18; Matthew 26:2
b. The prophesies of his Coming Death
4. And they remembered

B. The Women Return to the Others (v. 9)
1. How differently they return
2. The state of their hearts as they arrived
a. Sad, discouraged, doubtful

c. They came to anoint His body, to do the work of undertakers, but found God had Undertaken
3. The change as they return
a. The quick step, the excited heart
b. What a difference when you know that He lives!
4. You need to remember and return to Him

2. Imagine the excitement
3. What a change! They went to be morticians, but they returned as missionaries
4. They went to that tomb with their hands full of spices; they returned with their hearts filled with songs and their mouths filled with sermons
5. They went to anoint a body and returned to announce a blessing
6. The greatest message the world has ever heard
