Jerusalem. Assumption Day is celebrated in the Chapel of the Ascension by the various Christian communities. The Greek Orthodox bishop reads the passage from the New Testament about the Ascension. He holds in his hand a doctoral staff whose head symbolizes the Church, threatened on either side by snakes, the forces of evil. On his head is a golden mitre inlaid with precious stones with ikons of the four evangelists: St. Matthew, St. Mark, St. Luke and St. John.

A Threshing Floor In the ancient world, farmers used threshing floors to separate grain from its inedible husk (chaff) by beating it with a flail or walking animals on it—sometimes while towing a threshing sledge. Sledges were fitted with flint teeth to dehusk the grain more quickly. Other workers would turn the grain over so that it would be evenly threshed by the sledge.
