Grinding stone

‎In antiquity, it was the daily chore of women to grind the wheat and bake the bread. The lower grinding stone was mostly a large basalt stone with a rough surface. Since an adult consumed about 600 g grain per day, more then 2 kg flour had to be produced for a four or five person household.

A Threshing Floor In the ancient world, farmers used threshing floors to separate grain from its inedible husk (chaff) by beating it with a flail or walking animals on it—sometimes while towing a threshing sledge. Sledges were fitted with flint teeth to dehusk the grain more quickly. Other workers would turn the grain over so that it would be evenly threshed by the sledge.
