Jerusalem: Church of the Visitation- Arcade

Jerusalem. Ein Karem. A vaulted arcade next to the Crusader wall in the Church of the Visitation. The architect Antonio Barluzzi, who designed the modern church (as well as the churches on Mount Tabor and at Gethsemane), combined the new with the old. According to tradition, the Church of the Visitation was built by St. Helena, who dedicated it to the priest Zechariah, father of John the Baptist. In the 12th century the Crusaders rebuilt the church over the remains of the Byzantine church and dedicated it to Mary’s visit to her cousin Elizabeth. The Franciscans repaired it in the 17th century and the upper church dates from 1891.
