Denarius of Faustus Cornelius Sulla
Faustus Cornelius Sulla issued this Roman silver denarius in 62 B.C. to commemorate the bloodless victory of his father, Lucius Cornelius Sulla Felix, over Jugurtha of Numidia (modern Algeria) in 106 B.C. The coin portrays the goddess Diana with Faustus’ name in front of her (obverse) and Sulla Felix, enthroned, with an ally kneeling before him and Jugurtha, bound, kneeling behind him below Felix’s inscribed name (reverse). Sulla Felix later became dictator of Rome twice, and was the only person ever to conquer both Rome and Athens.
