Ferrying Wine across a River
In this fragment of a funerary relief from Roman Gaul, sculpted during Augustus’ reign (27 B.C.–A.D. 14), workers tow a boat ferrying wine across the Durance (Latin “Durentia”) River near Cabrières-d’Aigues, France. The relief illustrates some of the different containers in which wine could be transported and sold. The boat carries barrels, while the shelf above it holds different styles of amphorae, some covered in wicker. An wine was a valuable Roman commodity, with vineyards and wineries in every part of the Empire where grapes would grow.
