Bow
When carried around, the bow was normally not drawn. Since bows were usually composite bows, i.e. they were made of different kinds of wood glued together, the two ends often curved against the normal direction. In order to use the bow as a weapon, one had to strain the ends into the opposite direction and then insert the string. Frequently a second soldier was needed for this operation.
