The next two questions cover the same issue of Jewish distinctiveness from a different angle. Because the Gentiles worshiped false gods through idols, the Jews concluded that Yahweh, the true and living God (Jer. 10:10), was the God of Jews only. That was true in the sense that the Jews were the only people who acknowledged and worshiped Yahweh (except for a few proselyte Gentiles who joined with Judaism). But in reality Yahweh, as the Creator and Sovereign of all people is the God of all people. Before God called Abraham and his descendants in the nation Israel to be His Chosen People (Deut. 7:6) God dealt equally with all people. And even after God’s choice of Israel to be His special people, God made it plain (e.g., in the Book of Jonah) that He is the God of everyone, Gentiles as well as Jews. Being recipients of the promise involves God’s selective will. The “true” Israel had received all God’s promises so far. See 9:13 regarding the continual conflict between the true and false people of God. Romans 9:6 gives the thesis of Romans 9–11. The promise of 9:8 relates to the Abrahamic covenant (cf.4:13). The Israel spoken of in the Old Testament promises is not identical with the natural and physical descendants of Jacob. In Romans 9:7 Paul quoted Genesis 21:12 to prove the point of 9:6 that physical descent does not in and of itself make one a child of God and a recipient of the promise. Both Isaac and Ishmael were physical sons of Abraham, but Isaac was designated Abraham’s heir. In Romans 9:9 Paul quoted Genesis 18:10, a prophecy of Isaac’s birth. In Romans 9:12–13 Paul quoted from Genesis 25:23 and Malachi 1:2–3 to illustrate that God’s elective purposes are often contrary to human expectation.
With the coming of the Holy Spirit came also enablement to communicate God’s message supernaturally (Acts 2:4). The believers were filled with the Spirit for the specific function of proclaiming the gospel (2:11). The disciples were all filled with the Spirit, baptized into the body of Christ, and indwelt by the Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 12:13; cf. Ezek. 36:27; John 14:17). Luke’s Gospel presented people being filled with the Spirit to speak (Luke 1:41–42, 67). But the difference in Acts from the early chapters of Luke is the speaking in foreign languages—“in other languages.”

However God has dealt with us, he has dealt with us better than we deserve; and all in love, and for our good. Many have knowledge, but little judgment; those who have both, are fortified against the snares of Satan and furnished for the service of God. We are most apt to wander from God when we are easy in the world. We should leave our concerns to the disposal of God, seeing we know not what is good for us. Lord, thou art our bountiful Benefactor; incline our hearts to faith and obedience. The psalmist will go on in his duty with constancy and resolution. The proud are full of the world, and its wealth and pleasures; these make them senseless, secure, and stupid. God visits his people with affliction, that they may learn his statutes. Not only God’s promises, but even his law, his percepts, though hard to ungodly men are desirable, and profitable because they lead us with safety and delight unto eternal life.
It follows logically from this that the readers should, along with the author (note, Let us), make every effort to enter that rest. Unlike the assurance which all Christians have that they possess eternal life and will be raised up to enjoy it in the presence of God (cf. John 6:39-40), the share of the companions of Messiah in His dominion over creation is attained by doing His will to the end (Rev. 2:26-27). The readers must, therefore, be warned by Israel’s failure in the desert and take care that they do not follow Israel’s example of disobedience.

The variety of methods of interpretation and application of the OT parallels the fact that the OT was used for a variety of purposes. People tend to think only in terms of the use of the OT to show that Jesus was the Messiah, but there are a number of other uses with a variety of goals. Many OT texts are used to show Jesus is the Messiah, the fulfillment of the OT promises (Lk 4:16–21). Without lessening the fulfillment emphasis, however, other verses are applied to Jesus for other purposes: to evangelize (Acts 8:32–35); to demonstrate or convince (Acts 13:33–35); to rebuke (Mk 7:6, 7; Rom 11:7–10); to describe (Rev 1:12–15); and to worship (Phil 2:10, 11).

“ ‘Too often they have attacked me from my youth.’ Let Israel say, ‘Too often they have attacked me from my youth, yet they have not prevailed against me’ ” (Psa 129:1–2). As these verses show, sometimes problems can be solved by simply reframing the issue at hand.
Peter makes a “reframing” move in his first letter. He could have focused on the people’s sin and general need to repent, but then their attention would be on the problem, not solving it. So he shifts the focus: “Therefore, ridding yourselves of all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander, like newborn infants long for the unadulterated spiritual milk, so that by you may grow up to salvation” (1 Pet 2:1–2). Peter calls them to approach their relationship with Christ like a newborn would milk. They must make Christ such a priority that He becomes something they need and long for. Paul was overwhelmed with the sense of his indebtedness to Jesus Christ, and he spent himself to express it. The great inspiration in Paul’s life was his view of Jesus Christ as his spiritual creditor. Do I feel that sense of indebtedness to Christ regarding every unsaved soul? The sacred honour of my life as a saint is to fulfil my debt to Christ with them.
