Learn ChristEphesians 4:20–21 Excerpt The first formulation, ‘you did not learnChrist that way’, is without parallel. The phrase ‘to learn a person’ appears nowhere else in the Greek Bible, and to date it has not been traced in any prebiblical Greek document. In Colossians, the same verb is used of the readers having ‘learned’ the ‘grace of God’ from Epaphras, who had given them systematic instruction in the gospel (Col. 1:7). Here in Ephesians Christ himself is the content of the teaching which the readers learned. Just as he is the subject of the apostolic preaching and teaching (1 Cor. 1:2315:122 Cor. 1:194:511:4Phil. 1:15; cf. Acts 5:42), so he is the one whom the hearers ‘learn’ and ‘receive’More O’Brien, Peter Thomas. The Letter to the Ephesians. Human Spirit or Holy SpiritRomans 8:10 Excerpt The last part of this verse (literally but the Spirit [is] life because of "righteousness”) is also difficult. Paul may be referring to the human spirit (see TEV alternative “your spirit is alive") or to the Holy Spirit. The TEV takes the latter alternative, the Spirit is life for you. Throughout this entire passage (and definitely in verse 11) Paul is using the term Spirit as a reference to God’s Spirit, and so it seems likely that in this verse also he is referring to the Spirit of God. The Power of the Word for TestimonyExcerpt The psalmist prays for the lovingkindness of the Lord to be manifested in deliverance, according to God’s word. This will enable him to render a decisive answer to those who taunt him with the uselessness of serving God. If he fails to experience this deliverance, then he will be deprived of the power to bear witness to the truth before his tormentors. If God will give him this grace, he resolves to send the rest of his life observing his law. In so doing he will be walking “in a broad place,” i.e., he will know true freedom. Should the opportunity present itself, he is prepared to confess his love for God’s word before rulers. May 22: Motive Is Everything 1 Chronicles 11:1–47; 1 Timothy 6:3–10; Psalm 80:1–19 It’s not often that we take an honest look at our motivations. But it’s important to reevaluate them regularly. When our sight is not fixed on God, we might become entranced with goals that conflict with godliness. Even though we might initially be performing the right actions, our lives will start to reveal the motives of our hearts. Paul addresses this issue within the Ephesian community, where some people were spreading conflict in order to further their own gain. And this wasn’t just a problem with the perpetrators. This “constant wrangling by people of depraved mind and deprived of the truth, who consider godliness to be a means of gain” was like poison, spreading envy and strife throughout the community (1 Tim 6:5). To counteract this, Paul states that “godliness with contentment is a great means of gain” (1 Tim 6:5–6), but the gain he talks about is not success as we traditionally define it. Rather t…

Changeful experience often leads the anxious believer to enquire “Why is it thus with me?” I looked for light, but lo, darkness came; for peace, but behold trouble. It was but yesterday that I could read my title clear; to-day my evidences are bedimmed, and my hopes are clouded. Yesterday I could climb to Pisgah’s top, and view the landscape o’er, and rejoice with confidence in my future inheritance; to-day, my spirit has no hopes, but many fears; no joys, but much distress. Is this part of God’s plan with me? Can this be the way in which God would bring me to heaven? Yes, it is even so. May 22nd Now this explains it That they all may be one; as Thou, Father, art in Me, and I in Thee, that they also may be one in Us.John 17:21. If you are going through a solitary way, read John 17, it will explain exactly why you are where you are—Jesus has prayed that you may be one with the Father as He is. Are you helping God to answer that prayer, or have you some other end for your life? Since you became a disciple you cannot be as independent as you used to be. The purpose of God is not to answer our prayers, but by our prayers we come to discern the mind of God, and this is revealed in John 17. There is one prayer God must answer, and that is the prayer of Jesus—“that they may be one, even as We are one.” Are we as close to Jesus Christ as that? God is not concerned about our plans; He does not say—‘Do you want to go through this bereavement; this upset?’ He allows these things for His own purpose.
