Faith The winds howled, the waves crashed against the shore and the sea tossed the boat from one hand to another. On a nearby mountain, Jesus escaped into the tranquility of solitude, recharging his soul in prayer. The disciples were alone. They fought to keep the boat sound. They were afraid. They were wet. They were tired. About three o’clock in the morning, the disciples fell deeper into their fear. They saw what looked like a ghost moving across the water and coming toward them. Their exhaustion turned to terror. They lost it and started screaming. Jesus said, “It’s OK, it’s me. Don’t be afraid.” “Is it really you?” Peter asked. “If it is really you then give me the word and I’ll walk to you.” Jesus answered him, “Yes, it’s me, come on.” So Peter stepped out of the boat onto the water. Peter must have really been afraid. I mean, how could he have thought it would be safer with his feet in the middle of a storm tossed sea than in a boat? Peter began to walk toward Jesus, and was able to walk on the water, until he noticed the waves again and became afraid. In that instant, his fears overcame him and he began to sink into a liquid grave. His fear had wrestled his faith to the ground—he was going to die. But with a remnant of faith left, he cried out to Jesus, “Save me.” And Jesus did. It isn’t the amount of faith that saves us, sometimes all we have left is just a trace. Lemmel, 1864–1961 Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of our faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. (Hebrews 12:2) I’ve seen the face of Jesus … It was a wondrous sight! Oh, glorious face of beauty, Oh gentle touch of care; If here it is so blessed, what will it be up there? —W. Spencer Walton In our fast-paced daily life, how easy it is to get caught up in the “things of earth” so that eternal values become blurred and almost forgotten. As we conclude the first month’s journey through this new year, we need today’s hymn to remind us that we must continue to make Christ the central core of our lives—to pursue the Kingdom of God and His righteousness—if we are to be victorious believers. In 1918, Helen Howarth Lemmel, the author and composer of this hymn, was given a tract by a missionary friend. As she read it, Helen’s attention was focused on this line: “So then, turn your eyes upon Him, look full into His face, and you will find that the things of earth will acquire a strange new dimness.” She related: Suddenly, as if commanded to stop and listen, I stood still, and singing in my soul and spirit was the chorus of the hymn with not one conscious moment of putting word to word to make rhyme, or note to note to make melody. The verses were written the same week, after the usual manner of composition, but none the less dictated by the Holy Spirit. Since that day, Helen Lemmel’s hymn has been translated into many languages and used by God to challenge believers around the world with the necessity of living devoted lives for His glory. O soul, are you weary and troubled? No light in the darkness you see? There’s light for a look at the Savior, and life more abundant and free! Thru death into life everlasting He passed, and we follow Him there; over us sin no more hath dominion—For more than conq’rors we are! His word shall not fail you—He promised; believe Him, and all will be well: Then go to a world that is dying, His perfect salvation to tell! Eternal Life How much would you pay for eternal life? The editors of WORTH MAGAZINE recently asked some of our country’s wealthiest citizens that very question. The rich young ruler asked Jesus a form of this very question when he asked: “Good teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” (Mark 10:17) Outwardly, this man had it all. He was young, wealthy and powerful, yet he wanted more. Inwardly, something was missing. He worried about his eternal destiny. Showing due respect, he knelt before Jesus and called Him “Good Teacher.” Before the man could continue, Jesus interrupted him and asked him why he called Him “good.” Jesus wasn’t being contentious, rather, He was leading the young man into spiritual introspection. Did he know Jesus was God? Is this why he called Him good, or was he just being polite? No doubt he was searching for an answer. His curiosity certainly motivated him. The question Jesus asked him went straight to the reason for the motivation. Did he think Jesus was an answer, or did he know He is the answer? Did he think Jesus was good or did he know He is God? God does not want to be one of our solutions; He wants us to trust in Him exclusively. The rich young ruler learned that he had to stop trusting in his wealth and follow Jesus. On average, the wealthy women, responding to the magazines’ survey would pay just over $300,000.00. The men were a bit more generous, they would give a cool million. January 30 TAKE THE NAME OF JESUS WITH YOU Lydia Baxter, 1809–1874 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. (Colossians 3:17) “What’s in a name?” This was the probing question asked by Romeo in Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet. Christians have long realized that the whispered name “Jesus” can bring comfort and cheer to someone suffering or bereaved, and it can bring joyful hope to the fearful or depressed heart. The writer of this hymn text knew well the meaning of that special name “Jesus”. Although Lydia Baxter was a bed-ridden invalid much of her life, she remained continually cheerful and patient. “I have a very special armor,” she would tell her friends. “I have the name of Jesus. When the tempter tries to make me blue or despondent, I mention the name of Jesus, and he can’t get through to me anymore.” “Take the Name of Jesus With You” was written by Mrs. Baxter on her sick bed just four years before her death in 1874 at the age of 65. Throughout her lifetime she was known as an avid student of the Bible who loved to discuss the significance of scriptural names with her friends. She would inform them that Samuel means “asked of God,” Hannah—“grace,” Sarah—“princess,” and Naomi—“pleasantness.” But the name that meant everything to Lydia Baxter was the name “Jesus.” This hymn was used often during the Moody-Sankey evangelistic campaigns in the latter part of the 19th century. These words are still a comforting reminder of the peace and joy that result as we carry His precious Name throughout this life, and of the “joy of heav’n” that awaits us. Take the name of Jesus with you, child of sorrow and of woe; it will joy and comfort give you—Take it, then, where’er you go. Take the name of Jesus ever, as a shield from ev’ry snare; if temptations round you gather, breathe that holy name in prayer. O the precious name of Jesus! Estel’s Prayer “Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance IS Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord.” Romans 12:19 I learned a real lesson in grace as I sat on Estel’s couch one hot summer afternoon. “Pastor, I pray to God that He doesn’t take vengeance on my enemies,” Estel said. “I wouldn’t want my worst enemies to have to deal with God’s vengeance.” As I took another sip of Ice Tea, I let the power of his words sink in. I’ve never questioned God’s power. If He is powerful enough to create the universe, breathe into man the breath of life, and raise Jesus from the dead, He certainly is powerful enough to take vengeance out on my enemies. And Estel was definitely right, He is powerful enough to get the job done. So why then, was I struggling with wanting to do something to hurt those who were hurting me? Forgiving others, doesn’t mean those who hurt us go unpunished. It means that we step aside and allow the Lord to deal with punishment. If we are going to leave the matter in God’s hands, we must decide to trust Him. If He says He will repay, He will repay. As I examined my heart, deep down inside, I was withholding forgiveness because I didn’t want to be a total putz. If I forgave my enemies, then I was becoming a doormat for them to walk over or worse yet, a punching bag for them to disrespect. At the time, I wasn’t able to pray Estel’s prayer for my enemies. The best I could do was to forgive them and turn them over to God’s wrath. But as God continued to work on my heart, in time, I was able to take the next step and pray Estel’s prayer, and to delight in God’s grace when He answered it. Jim L. January 29 SO SEND I YOU E. Margaret Clarkson, 1915– Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!” (Isaiah 6:8) Isolated from Christian fellowship and feeling very lonely, Margaret Clarkson was a 23-year-old school teacher in a gold-mining camp town in northern Ontario, Canada. Her friends and family were many miles away. As she meditated on John 20:21 one evening, God spoke to her through the phrase “So send I you.” She realized that this lonely area was the place to which God had sent her. This was her mission field. As she quickly set down her thoughts in verse, one of the finest and most popular missionary hymns of the 20th century was born. Miss Clarkson has authored many articles and poems for Christian and educational periodicals. For more than 30 years she was involved in the Toronto, Canada, public school system in various educational capacities. Because of a physical disability, Miss Clarkson has been unable to fulfill her early desire of going to a foreign mission field. Yet her distinguished career in education, her many inspiring writings, and this challenging missionary hymn have accomplished much for the kingdom of God, even though she has remained in Canada. These words have been greatly used by God to challenge many to respond to God’s call for service with the words of the prophet Isaiah, “Here am I … send me!” So send I you to labor unrewarded, to serve unpaid, unloved, unsought, unknown, to bear rebuke, to suffer scorn and scoffing—So send I you to toil for me alone. Enemies I liked Church fellowships when I was a boy. After the meal, the kids always ran outside to play in the backyard of the church. It adjoined cotton fields to the south and east. We waited until it was pitch dark, then we started playing “hide and go seek.” The cotton fields were “out of bounds,” but there were plenty of bushes and alcoves to hide in. You remember the game, don’t you. The person who is “it” hid their eyes then counted to 100 while everyone else finds hiding places. If “it” finds and touches you, you lost and became “it.” However, “it” could not “get you” if you ran to “the safe place.” I remember the sheer terror when “it” walked past my hiding place. I never liked someone pursuing me. It was a creeping feeling. I’d hold my breath and try not to make a single peep. “It” wanted nothing more than to get me … I knew it and did everything I could to keep from getting “got.” There are people in real life who think they are “it” and are out “to get you!” They don’t like you, and will do you harm if they get the chance. It may be a jealous co-worker, a hostile ex-spouse or a feuding family member. Where is God when your enemies pursue you? Does He care? Yes! He is your “safe place.” Moses experienced God’s protection. God said: “When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by.” (Exodus 33:22) Call on God and let Him “hide your soul in the cleft of the rock.” Jim L. January 28 O ZION, HASTE Mary Ann Thomson, 1834–1923 May Your ways be known on earth, Your salvation among all nations. (Psalm 67:2) The Christian church is God’s appointed means of spreading the gospel around the world. A church that is not a missionary church will quench the Spirit of God and miss His blessing. God’s agenda for history is “that all nations might believe and obey Him” (Romans 16:26). All too often, however, the church has allowed itself to become self-centered, merely maintaining the status quo and failing to respond actively to this biblical directive. That’s why we need missionary hymns like this one. Its author, Mary Ann Thomson, was born in London, England, but spent most of her life in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she was active in the Church of the Annunciation. She wrote a number of hymns and poems, this being the only one to survive, however. She wrote “O Zion, Haste” out of a stressful experience in 1868. One night, as she was watching her child who was ill with typhoid fever, the desire to write a missionary hymn pressed upon her. Some have felt that perhaps Mrs. Thomson had made a covenant with God that if he would spare her child, she would consecrate him to His service. The opening line of the final stanza, “give of thy sons to bear the message glorious,” could indicate this. May these words move us from lethargy to evangelism. O Zion, haste, thy mission high fulfilling, to tell to all the world that God is Light, that He who made all nations is not willing one soul should perish, lost in shades of night. Behold, how many thousands still are lying, bound in the darksome prison-house of sin, with none to tell them of the Savior’s dying, or of the life He died for them to win. Proclaim to every people, tongue and nation that God in whom they live and move is love: Tell how He stooped to save His lost creation, and died on earth that man might live above. Give of thy sons to bear the message glorious; give of thy wealth to speed them on their way; pour out thy soul for them in prayer victorious; and all thou spendest Jesus will repay. Refrain: Publish glad tidings, tidings of peace; tidings of Jesus, redemption, and release. Endurance “Now some Jews arrived from Antioch and Iconium and turned the crowds into a murderous mob. They stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city, apparently dead. [20] But as the believers stood around him, he got up and went back into the city. The next day he left with Barnabas for Derbe.” (Acts 14:19–20 NLT) Paul was stoned to death and got up and went back to work the next day. Think about that, he didn’t even take a sick day. Another time, he was thrown in prison but he didn’t forget about his mission. Acts 16:25 says “Around midnight, Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening.” (NLT) Paul could have been depressed and discouraged; instead, he used his circumstance to further his mission. Greatness is never born without birth pains. It is born in spite of discouragement and heartaches. Who knows, the discouragement you face today could be the context for your next victory. This side of our leather bound bibles, it is easy to gloss over these passages of scripture and only reflect upon the great miracles and success of Paul’s ministry. Truth be told, he faced discouragements and impediments that would thwart most people’s advances. Yet, he remained true and pressed on. At the end of his life, Paul wrote, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 2 Tim. 4:7 (NIV) To Paul, his mission was a battle to fight, a course to complete and a commitment to keep. If Paul had to fight a fight and run a race, don’t you think you will too? Fighting a fight means you will have opposition. Instead of being discouraged, remember that those problems might just be the context for your next victory. Finishing a race means it will take endurance and effort. January 27 WE’VE A STORY TO TELL Words and Music by H. Ernest Nichol, 1862–1928 All nations will come and worship before You, for Your righteous acts have been revealed. (Revelation 15:4) “A story to tell. A song to be sung. A message to give. A Savior to show.” Here is a concise summary of the task of worldwide evangelization—a gospel that must be demonstrated as well as proclaimed. Evangelism began well. The early Christians, though often fiercely persecuted by the Romans, were successful. By A.D. 380, Christianity was recognized as the official religion throughout the empire. Yet for the next 1,000 years and more, the flame of evangelism burned low. The 16th century Protestant Reformation movement saw a brief revival of evangelical fervor, but not until the 18th century did Protestants make their first serious attempt to organize missionary work. The expansion of missions in the 18th and 19th centuries was clearly connected with the waves of revival that were sweeping across Europe and North America. Since the close of World War II, the cause of world missions has grown markedly. It is estimated that presently more than 250,000 missionaries are sent out every year, with many of these workers coming from Third World countries. But the task is far from finished. More than two-thirds of the world’s population is yet unreached with the good news of Christ. The Wycliffe Bible translators report that there are still 723 tribes without a Bible translation. Nearly every mission board desperately needs more workers. “We’ve a Story to Tell” was written and composed by an English musician, H. Ernest Nichol, in 1896. These words are still widely sung by young and old alike and represent the missionary zeal that should always burn in our hearts: We’ve a story to tell to the nations that shall turn their hearts to the right, a story of truth and mercy, a story of peace and light, a story of peace and light. We’ve a song to be sung to the nations that shall lift their hearts to the Lord; a song that shall conquer evil and shatter the spear and sword, and shatter the spear and sword. We’ve a message to give to the nations—that the Lord who reigneth above hath sent us His Son to save us and show us that God is love, and show us that God is love. We’ve a Savior to show to the nations who the path of sorrow hath trod, that all of the world’s great peoples might come to the truth of God, might come to the truth of God. Endurance James 5:11 NLT “We give great honor to those who endure under suffering. Job is an example of a man who endured patiently. From his experience we see how the Lord’s plan finally ended in good, for he is full of tenderness and mercy.” Lance Armstrong is a walking, excuse me, cycling inspiration. In his book, Go the Distance, Ed Rowell wrote: “If anyone had a reason to give up, it would have been Lance Armstrong. Lance was a world-class cyclist, one of the rare Americans competing in the elite road races of Europe. In 1996, the twenty-four-year-old climbed to the number-one ranking in his sport but was then diagnosed with testicular cancer. The cancer had metastasized and spread to his lungs and brain. Few expected him to survive the disease” (p. 187) He not only survived, he came back like gang busters. In July of 2002, Armstrong won his fourth Tour de France, just six years after being diagnosed with an advanced stage of testicular cancer. “We have unrealized capacities that only emerge in crisis—capacities for enduring, for living, for hoping, for caring, for enjoying. Each time we overcome pain, I believe that we grow.” Armstrong says. “Cancer was the making of me: Through it I became a more compassionate, complete, and intelligent man, and therefore a more alive one.” (http://www.forbes.com/asap/2001/1203/064.html) Sometimes, as in Armstrong’s case, what we think will be the ruin of us becomes what brings out the best in us. January 26 CHRIST FOR THE WORLD WE SING Samuel Wolcott, 1813–1886 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I will be with you always, to the very end of the age. (Matthew 28:19, 20) The task of worldwide evangelization is a staggering challenge. It is estimated that the world’s population is presently about 5 billion people, with two-thirds of mankind still unreached with the gospel. Also one-third of the human race is nearly destitute, lacking the basic necessities for survival. Yet we are told that by the year 2,000 the population will add another billion, and that in the next 100 years the population will double to more than 10 billion people. All this time, other world religions are also pressing their claims with increasing vigor. Islam is growing at a rate of 16 percent annually, Hinduism at 12 percent. Christianity’s growth is estimated at less then 10 percent. Samuel Wolcott, author of this missionary text, had a burning zeal for the spread of the gospel and the spiritual needs of the world. In his earlier years he had been a missionary to Syria before poor health forced his return to America. Later he served as pastor in numerous Congregational churches, as well as acting as secretary of the Ohio Home Missionary Society. It was while pastoring the Plymouth Congregational Church in Cleveland, Ohio, that he wrote this text. He stated: The Young Men’s Christian Association of Ohio met in one of our churches with their motto in evergreen letters over the pulpit, “Christ for the World, and the World for Christ.” Pastor Wolcott was so moved by this motto that he promptly wrote these words, which have since been widely used to challenge Christians to have a vision for the needs of our entire world. Christ for the world we sing! The world to Christ we bring with loving zeal: The poor and them that mourn, the faint and overborne, sinsick and sorrow worn, whom Christ doth heal. Christ for the world we sing! The world to Christ we bring with fervent prayer: The wayward and the lost, by restless passions tossed, redeemed at countless cost from dark despair. Happy Endings In simpler times, Beaver Cleaver packing a hobo’s handkerchief with provisions and sneaking out the front door to run away was an innocent plot line. We knew the ending from the very beginning. Beaver would eventually come home to enjoy a glass of cold milk and warm cookies. Today, the endings are not usually so happy. A “runaway” is likely to be raped, conned and exploited. Why do children run? According to the National Runaway Switchboard (1–800–621–4000), the number one reason children run has to do with family dynamics. Some families are not Norman Rockwell paintings; they are filled with drugs, alcohol, physical, sexual or emotional abuse. Harriet Tubman knew the pain of physical abuse. When she was 13, her skull was cracked open while defending a fellow slave from their master’s tyranny. She ran, but she came back. She returned to help transport other slaves to freedom. Because of her passion for freedom, Tubman helped over 300 slaves find freedom, including her own parents. Sometimes running is the best thing a person can do. Other times, running is the worse thing a person can do. Some runners aren’t trying to escape tyranny, they just can’t handle authority. Some people remain where they are physically, but not emotionally; through resentment, anger and rebellion they insulate themselves from any meaningful contact with God—they run. With their actions and attitudes they give God the “silent treatment” and in essence, they say, “I want nothing to do with you, God.” They rebel against His authority. But with divine patience, God stands like the prodigal’s father, ready for the runaway child to come home. And sometimes, there are happy endings. Jim L. (Galatians 3:28) One of the clear teachings of the Bible is that the gospel does not presuppose the superiority of any race or culture. In the past, missionary endeavor has too frequently imposed “our” culture on others while spreading the gospel, often putting native believers in bondage to another culture rather than to Christ and the Scriptures alone. Written in 1908 by the noted English writer, John Oxenham, this missionary hymn text was part of a script for a pageant at a giant missionary event sponsored by the London Missionary Society’s exhibition, The Orient in London. It is estimated that over a quarter of a million people viewed this presentation. It was continued from 1908–1914 both in England and in the United States. An interesting account of the impact of this hymn relates an incident during the closing days of World War II when two ships were anchored together, one containing Japanese aliens, and the other American soldiers, all waiting to be repatriated. For an entire day they lined the rails, glaring at one another. Suddenly someone began to sing “In Christ There Is No East Or West.” Then another on the opposite ship joined in. Soon there was an extraordinary chorus of former enemies unitedly praising God with these words: In Christ there is no East or West, in him no South or North, but one great fellowship of love thru out the whole wide earth. Empty Tomb I’ve never been to Israel, and frankly, I’ve never really wanted to go. The Dean of the Seminary where I taught in Albuquerque offered to help finance a trip for me if I went with the students on an archeological dig. I said, “Thanks, but no thanks.” I know, I know, it isn’t normal for a preacher not to want to go to Israel, but I don’t. The last thing I want to do is play Indiana Jones in a part of the world that is always at war. (Remember the scene with the snake pit?) Besides that, there’s nothing I really want to see there. But I do have a dear friend who always wanted to go and got her wish a few years before her husband passed away. One morning, over breakfast, she showed me her pictures of the trip. I stared at one particular photo longer than the others—Jesus’ tomb. Of course, there is no way of knowing if it was the genuine tomb or a tourist trap, but I suspended any disbelief I had and looked with fascination. I listened to Nell as she described the heavy gloom that squeezed her soul as she walked inside. She felt the full weight of Calvary as she recalled all the sermons she’d ever heard about the way He died—how the Jews conspired against Him and how the Romans beat Him. She couldn’t linger, she had to get out, but something stopped her cold as she turned to walk out. The words above the exit of the tomb changed her entire perspective. She read these words: “He has risen; He is not here; behold, here is the place where they laid Him.” (Mark 16:6) On second thought, the very fact that there is “nothing to see” might be reason enough to go and not see it. January 24 FROM GREENLAND’S ICY MOUNTAINS Reginald Heber, 1783–1826 Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into His harvest field.” (Matthew 9:37, 38) We hear many missionary sermons in our churches, but not often do we sing such a beautifully worded and challenging missionary hymn as this one, which was quickly and spontaneously written by Reginald Heber. These well-chosen words and ideas inspire us to spread the blessings of salvation to all people and nations until our Lord “in bliss returns to reign.” Heber was a minister in the Anglican church in England. With his keen interest in world missions, he did much through his writings and influence to promote the missionary activity that greatly increased during his lifetime. In the summer of 1819, Heber was asked by his father-in-law if he knew a worthy hymn that could be used at a missionary service the next Sunday. Reginald went at once to his study for a few minutes of quiet meditation and soon returned with the first stanzas of this text. His family was very pleased with it. Heber, however, feeling the hymn was still incomplete, returned to his study and completed the triumphant final verse. Five years later the tune was composed specifically for Heber’s text by the noted American educator and church musician, Lowell Mason. It is said that Mason composed this tune with a great sense of inspiration. Today, Reginald Heber is ranked as one of the foremost 19th century English hymnists, having written 57 well-known hymns, including “Holy, Holy, Holy.” As a result of his zeal for missions, he became an Anglican bishop to Calcutta, India, but died there at the age of 43. Notice how large is the Lord’s harvest field. From Greenland’s icy mountains, from India’s coral strand, where Afric’s sunny fountains roll down their golden sand, from many an ancient river, from many a palmy plain, they call us to deliver their land from error’s chain. Shall we, whose souls are lighted with wisdom from on high, shall we to men benighted the lamp of life deny? Salvation! O salvation! The joyful sound proclaim till earth’s remotest nation has learned Messiah’s name. Waft, waft, ye winds, His story, and you, ye waters, roll, till like a sea of glory it spreads from pole to pole; till o’er our ransomed nature the Lamb for sinners slain, Redeemer, King, Creator, in bliss returns to reign. Emptied Philip. 2:5–11 NASB “Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, [6] who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, [7] but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. [8] And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. [9] Therefore also God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, [10] that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those who are in heaven, and on earth, and under the earth, [11] and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” The Apostle Paul penned these words to teach his readers a lesson about humility, but in the process, teaches us a great deal about Jesus Christ. In the incarnation, Jesus “emptied Himself,.” Paul said. That’s an unusual phrase—what does it mean? What did Jesus “empty Himself” of? In the previous verses, Paul establishes what we already know, that Jesus was God. And in the verses that follow, Paul mentions that Jesus is Lord. He is the one that every knee bows to and that every tongue confesses as Lord. So we know that Jesus didn’t divest Himself of His divinity or Lordship. There has never been a time when Jesus wasn’t God. Not in time and not in eternity. He was active in creation, and He will be active in judgement. He is the eternal God, the second person in the trinity. He is the fairest of ten thousand, the bright and morning star. He is Lord! He is Lord! He is risen from the dead, and He is Lord. He is worthy of worship and worthy of praise. He is the alpha and the omega. He bore our sin. The King eternal, “emptied himself” to become man. I know that you are expecting an answer to the question, “what did Jesus empty Himself of” in this paragraph, and I’m sorry to disappoint you, but I don’t know. Some questions don’t need to be answered, they just needed to be pondered. Though I don’t know what He gave up to become man—I know that He did it willingly, and I know that one of the reasons I am filled with hope today, is because He emptied Himself then. Take a minute to think about it. God became man and dwelt among us. Knowing what He gave up to do so isn’t as important as knowing that He did it-knowing that He did it for you. And me. Jim L. Emergency It started out a lazy Saturday morning. All of the boxes were unpacked, but we still had much work to do after the move into our first home. After my first cup of coffee, I decided to hang the new doors between the kitchen and the den. We took out the sliding glass doors and were replacing them with some wooden ones. I didn’t want to take the chance of one of my small boys walking through the glass and getting hurt like my Dad had several years earlier. We had an industrial fire extinguisher on the wall next to the doors. This was a central location in the house, and we thought it was a good idea to have the extinguisher near the kitchen. We removed the doors, replaced the tracks and took the new doors out of the box. Now came the big moment: I was positioning the first door in its place, the whole family gathered around to see how it would look. I had some trouble fitting it into place. I applied pressure, and the door jumped out of the track and hit the fire extinguisher, which slipped from its holder and fell four feet onto my preschool son. Blood was everywhere. I dropped the door, snatched up my son, and sped to the hospital emergency room. I was in such a hurry that I left my wife behind. I knew I had to take him to someone who could help him. In that moment, nothing else mattered—not traffic laws, not money; the only thing that mattered was getting help for my son. We were doing our best to provide a safe environment for our son. We removed the glass doors and hung the fire extinguisher as safety measures. Yet our best efforts resulted in his injury. I’m grateful that God protected Stephen from our “protection.” Today, Stephen is sixteen years old and is just fine. Declare His glory among the nations, His marvelous deeds among all peoples. (Psalm 96:2, 3) The heart of the Christian gospel is a person, not a church or a system of doctrinal interpretation. To evangelize is to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ—that He came to this world, died for our sins, and was raised from the grave according to the Scriptures. And, as the reigning Lord, He now meets every human need with His forgiveness of sins and the indwelling gift of His Holy Spirit to all who repent and believe. Easter Back in the 1880‘s Nietzsche declared that “God is dead,” and before the turn of the Twentieth Century, Shaw and Wells chimed in saying the 20th Century would mark the end of the world’s “religious phase.” Yet, today a church now meets in Russia’s Museum of Religion and Atheism—the former center of atheism. Nearly half of the United States’ population attend Worship on a regular basis while revival is sweeping through Latin America and Christianity grows behind China’s iron curtain. Nietzsche, Shaw and Wells have long since decayed in their graves, and God continues to live! That’s the message of Easter. He is risen. He is risen, indeed! Muhammad died, and was buried. His faithful followers take pilgrimages to visit his remains, the same is true of Buddha and other religious leaders. But it is not true of Jesus. January 21 STILL, STILL WITH THEE Harriet B. Stowe, 1812–1896 Morning by morning, O Lord, You hear my voice; morning by morning I lay my requests before You and wait in expectation. (Psalm 5:3) “How precious to me are Your thoughts, O God!… When I awake, I am still with Thee”. This was the phrase that inspired Harriet Beecher Stowe as she meditated one morning on Psalm 139:17, 18. In the midst of a busy and productive life—as a writer, an avid crusader against world-wide slavery, and a mother of six—it was Harriet Stowe’s practice to rise at 4:30 each morning to “see the coming of the dawn, hear the singing of the birds, and to enjoy the over-shadowing presence of her God.” As a devoted mother and the wife of a seminary professor, Harriet still found time to write numerous hymns, a volume of religious verse, and approximately 40 books dealing with the various social problems of her time. Her best known novel was Uncle Tom’s Cabin, which had a strong influence against slavery just before the Civil War. In later life, as she looked back over many of the difficulties she had experienced in her busy years of raising a family while engaging in many pursuits, Harriet wrote, “I thank God there is one thing running through all of them—from the time I was 13 years old [the age of her conversion]—and that is the intense unwavering sense of Christ’s educating, guiding presence and care.” It is commonly agreed by hymnists that for sheer poetic beauty, there are few hymn texts that excel these lines: Still, still with Thee—when purple morning breaketh, when the bird waketh and the shadows flee; fairer than morning, lovelier than daylight, dawns the sweet consciousness—I am with Thee! Alone with Thee amid the mystic shadows—the solemn hush of nature newly born; alone with Thee in breathless adoration, in the calm dew and freshness of the morn. Easter And the son cried out, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46 KJV) Beneath the cross, His mother watched through her tears as her Son yelled in agony. Next to her was the disciple whom Jesus loved—his cousin John. He saw it all. The Roman guards who beat Him and nailed Him to the cross were watching. The crowds who called for his blood watched with morbid curiosity, but not His heavenly Father. He turned His back on Jesus as he shook from sin’s death blow. Joseph of Arimathaea took his limp, blood stained body from the cross and placed him in his tomb. They sealed the tomb with a stone and posted Roman guards to protect his remains with their own lives if necessary. The crowd dissipated. The night fell; the Sabbath came and Jesus was dead. It was a bleak moment. Hopeless? Despondent? Confused? But we know the end of the story, don’t we? Jesus burst through death, holding the keys to death and hell in His nail-scarred hand. Death could not keep its bony fingers around our Lord; the Father would not leave Him in the grave. He arose! And when he did, He made new life possible to all who believe. Paul wrote: That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. (Romans 10:9 KJV) We have a choice. We can trust in our God who provides and believe that He raised Jesus from the dead and experience eternal life. Or we can take the death blow upon ourselves and our children. Dreams The Koran mentions Jesus and gives enough information to pique a Muslim’s attention about Christ. Chapter 3:42–55 of the Koran is almost identical to Luke chapter 2. It mentions the Virgin Birth, that Jesus was righteous, and that He performed miracles—including raising the dead to life. At the end of the passage it says that God says to Jesus, “you will come to me and I will lift your followers above all people of the world.” A missionary to Bangladesh recently told me, “It doesn’t lift Jesus up to Savior status, but it does lift him above prophet status.” It provides enough information to give the dreams context. The missionary told me about a dream that led a Muslim Man to find Christ. In his dream, he saw a big crowd of people that was trying to get to a man in the middle of the crowd who had a veil over his face. He began to make his way through the crowd to touch the man, and he was able to get close enough to see him, but before he could touch him, he woke up. He couldn’t believe it. He thought that the man was Jesus, but he wanted confirmation. So he spent the next three years wondering if the man in the dream was really Jesus. On a business trip he walked into a Catholic Church and saw a painting of Jesus—it had the same face as the man in his dream. He had his answer. But his journey wasn’t over, now he needed to find someone who could tell him about Jesus, the man in his dream. It is not against the law to preach the gospel in Bangladesh, but it is discouraged and the authorities will throw those who proselyte people to Christianity in jail. So he couldn’t casually thumb through the yellow pages and pick out a church. But by the providence of God, he found one of the eight nationals who work with our missionary as evangelists. The evangelist led him to faith in Jesus. This time, it wasn’t the man trying to touch Jesus, but Jesus reached out his nail-scarred hand and touched him and set him free from the bondage of his sin and saved his soul. Jim L. January 19 BE STILL, MY SOUL Katharina von Schlegel, 1697–? English Translation-Jane L. Borthwick, 1813–1897 Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth. (Psalm 46:10) Spiritual revivals throughout history have always been accompanied by an outburst of new song. This was especially true of the 16th century reformation movement when, following centuries of dormancy during the Middle Ages, congregational singing was rediscovered. However, by the 17th century the church was once more cold and non-evangelistic. Again God lit the fires of revival in the latter half of that century with a movement known as the Pietistic Revival in Germany, which was similar to the Puritan and Wesleyan movements in England. The Pietistic movement also gave birth to many rich German hymns, one of which incorporates the contributions of three persons. Katharina von Schlegel was the outstanding woman of this revival movement. Little is known of her other than that she was a Lutheran and may have been the canoness of an evangelical women’s seminary in Germany. However, we do know that she contributed a number of lyrics to a collection of spiritual songs published in 1752. Approximately 100 years after it was written, this hymn text was translated into English by Jane Borthwick, a scholar noted for her fine work in translating German texts. This hymn tune is an arrangement of one movement from Jean Sibelius’ “Finlandia.” Sibelius was Finland’s best-known composer, and his music is generally characterized by a strong nationalistic fervor. God has used the talents of these three individuals from different lands to provide His people with a hymn that teaches so well the biblical truth that we all need to relearn daily: “They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength …” (Isaiah 40:31). Diversity All of the active members of Timothy Urbany’s Sunday School Class at Eastborough Church in Colorado Springs, Colorado, were white, middle class, and married with children. They were “birds of a feather that flocked together.” Urbany longed for his class to be more diverse, more accepting of others, so he invited a Christian friend from work to attend his class to help him evaluate their potential for growth. She was a single, young black woman. She arrived early, helped herself to a donut and some coffee. She participated in the discussion and did her best to make herself at home. No one spoke to her. The next week, Urbany explained to the class who the young lady was and reported to his class, her impressions of the class. They were stunned that none of the members of their loving class reached out to her to make her feel welcome and wanted. It was almost as if they didn’t even notice her. Really, the class’s reaction was predictable. Most people naturally tend to gravitate toward people they have something in common with. In many ways, the church isn’t much different than lunch time at any middle school. The “pocket protector” kids sit at one table, the jocks at another, and the princesses at another. We tend to cluster with people like us. And in many ways its OK, but where it isn’t OK is if someone doesn’t feel valued or welcome because they don’t fit our mold and if we don’t try to make a connection. Urbany’s class is still fairly homogeneous, but later, they did assimilate a person into their fellowship who closely resembled the lady who previously visited them. They are learning to minister to whomever the Lord gives them, not just people like them. They are learning to show preference to everyone. Jim L. January 18 SURELY GOODNESS AND MERCY John W. Peterson, 1921– Alfred B. Smith, 1916– Answer me, O Lord, out of the goodness of Your love; in Your great mercy turn to me. (Psalm 69:16) Charles Haddon Spurgeon, known as the “Prince of Preachers” of the 19th century, labored for more than 20 years on his unrivaled commentary of the Psalms, a seven-volume work entitled The Treasury of David. “Only those who have meditated profoundly upon the Psalms,” wrote Spurgeon, “can have any adequate conception of the wealth they contain.” Meditate on this comment that Mr. Spurgeon made about the 23rd Psalm, the basis of this hymn: The sweetest word of the whole is that monosyllable, “my.” He does not say, “The Lord is the shepherd of the world at large, and leadeth forth the multitude as his flock.” If He is a shepherd to no one else, He is a shepherd to me. He cares for me, watches over me, and preserves me. The words are in the present tense. Whatever be the believer’s position, he is even now under the pastoral care of Jehovah. Two well-known names in the field of gospel music, John W. Peterson and Alfred B. Smith, collaborated in 1958 to write this popular paraphrase of Psalm 23. Mr. Smith recalls the humorous touch that provided the initial inspiration for this song: It was written after receiving a letter from one of the descendants of P. P. Bliss, telling of Bliss’s first country school teacher, Miss Murphy, whom he dearly loved. It told of her teaching the class (before they could read or write) to memorize the 23rd Psalm. When the part “surely goodness and mercy” was reached, little Philip thought it said, “surely good Miss Murphy shall follow me all the days of my life.” This little incident focused our thoughts on the phrase which became the heart and title of the song. Discipleship Unfortunately, to many people discipleship is more of a program than a lifestyle. They fill their notebooks, making sure every blank is filled, with ferocious devotion, they memorize selected passages and meet with their accountability partners to see that they’ve crossed every “t” and dotted every “i” in their program. While none of these activities are bad, they aren’t necessarily discipleship. While discipleship involves actions, it has more to do with attitudes than actions. Unless the attitude is right, all of these activities can become an end in themselves. Following Christ, in my opinion, can never be boiled down to filling in a blank or attending a meeting it is far too organic for that. It may involve those things, but it is not those things. Condoleezza Rice, President Bush’s top adviser on National Security, is a regular church goer whose faith affects the way she lives her life. In an interview with Biography Magazine, she said her religious faith is “… very deeply who I am. I actually think it gives you a kind of optimism, a sense that you’re not the most important being on earth or in heaven. I think it leaves you feeling supported and not alone. It’s not as if when you’re facing some decision you say all right, how would a Christian deal with this … It’s just a kind of organic sense of who you are.” (Biography, Sept 2001, p. 63) Discipleship isn’t what you do. Being a disciple is who you are-it changes everything. Too many people are “trying to act Christian” instead of just being who they are a new creation in Christ. I’m not encouraging you to drop out of any program of discipleship you’re in. Keep filling in those blanks, memorizing those scriptures and meeting with your friends. But as you are doing it, remember that discipleship affects everything in your life, it doesn’t just apply to what happens on Tuesday night from 7:00 to 8:00. January 17 THE KING OF LOVE MY SHEPHERD IS Henry W. Baker, 1821–1877 For He is our God and we are the people of His pasture, the flock under His care. (Psalm 95:7) The beloved words of Psalm 23 have undoubtedly provided greater comfort and encouragement to God’s people through the years than any other portion of Scripture. In times of deep need, how eloquently these tender words from the psalmist David minister to our wounded spirits. This psalm has also formed the textual basis for more sacred music than any other scriptural setting. But to many devout Christians the best-loved hymn based on Psalm 23 is this paraphrase by an English musician, Sir Henry Baker. In this text Baker skillfully combines thoughts of King David with lessons from the New Testament. For example, the words from the third stanza are based on the parable of the lost sheep in Luke 15:5. The fourth stanza includes the phrase “Thy cross before to guide me.” Here the shepherd is identified as Christ by the inclusion of the cross symbolism. Sir Henry William Baker is highly regarded by students of hymnody for his work as the editor-in-chief of one of the most monumental hymnals ever published, Hymns, Ancient and Modern, a book which sold more than 60 million copies after it was published in 1861. Disappointment “But Peninnah made fun of Hannah because the Lord had closed her womb. [7] Year after year it was the same Peninnah would taunt Hannah as they went to the Tabernacle. Hannah would finally be reduced to tears and would not even eat.” (1 Samuel 1:6–7 NLT) Hannah’s life wasn’t easy. She shared the affections of her husband with another woman, who teased her unmercifully because Hannah couldn’t have children. In a day when the worth of a woman was measured by the number of sons she bore to her husband, Hannah felt worthless. To make it worse, her husband’s other wife was prolific. Peninnah teased and taunted Hannah until Hannah couldn’t eat or function. Hannah was an emotional “basket case.” I don’t think she was upset because what she had wasn’t good enough. She was grieved because she didn’t feel like she was fulfilling her destiny and living up to her potential. Perhaps you weren’t homecoming queen or didn’t graduate at the top of your class. Maybe you didn’t have a prom date, didn’t get the leading role in the play or wasn’t the star on the football field. Maybe your children aren’t the cutest, brightest or most athletically inclined. The diamond on your finger may not be as large as the one on the person sitting next to you and you may not have the newest car in the parking lot. Cancer may have disfigured your body and disappointment may have scarred your soul, but the sum of all these events have made you the caring, compassionate person that you are. How unsearchable His judgments … (Romans 11:33) Good when He gives, supremely good, nor less when He denies. Even crosses from His sovereign hand are blessings in disguise. —Unknown The hymn “God Moves in a Mysterious Way” has been acclaimed as one of the finest songs ever written on the theme of God’s providence. This label is made all the more amazing by the fact that the hymn text was written by an English poet who lived a lifetime of mental distress. William Cowper’s emotional upsets included an 18-month stay in an insane asylum and later several attempted suicides. During his time in the asylum, Cowper began reading the Bible. At the age of 33 he had a genuine conversion experience. Yet he was periodically haunted by deep depressions, voices, and visions, and the overwhelming thought that God had forsaken him and would doom him to hell. But between these times of mental melancholia, William Cowper was a gifted writer. Several of his secular works achieved great literary fame. For nearly two decades he worked closely with John Newton in Olney, England, and eventually their combined talents produced the famous Olney Hymns hymnal. In this ambitious collection of 349 hymns, 67 were written by Cowper, including such favorites as “O For a Closer Walk With God” and “There Is a Fountain.” “God Moves in a Mysterious Way” was originally titled “Conflict: Light Shining Out Of Darkness.” It is thought to be Cowper’s final hymn text and a reflection of God’s leading throughout his own lifetime. There is even speculation that it was written following a failed attempt at suicidal drowning. Regardless of the original motivation for their writing, these words have since been used to bring much comfort to God’s people for nearly two centuries: God moves in a mysterious way His wonders to perform; He plants His foot-steps in the sea and rides upon the storm. Determination “And not only that, but God himself is right alongside to keep you steady and on track until things are all wrapped up by Jesus.” 1 Cor. 1:8 (MsgB) “The Apprentice” is required viewing for some business school students across the country as their professors are using the show as a starting point for discussion on successful business practices. Certainly Donald Trump knows something about success. He also knows something about failure. In the early ’90‘s Trump was $900 million in the hole. Today his accumulated wealth is in the 2.5 to $5 billion range. The Donald has “Seven Rules of Success.” The third one might be the most important, it is, “You cannot stop if there is a concrete wall in front of you, you have to go through it. You can never, ever give up or even think in terms of giving up. “A rule Trump obviously lives by. He didn’t give up, even when his situation looked hopeless. He continued to pursue his dream of accumulating wealth. If Trump can be persistent in such an unimportant goal like accumulating wealth, shouldn’t we be even more persistent in the goals we have that spring out of our Christian faith? Goals like purity, performing good works, and spreading the good news. If we are not careful, our good intentions will melt away into discouragement and leave us with nothing to show for our beliefs than regret. But if we believe the right things and remain consistent to those beliefs through hardships and trials then we can be a part of changing the world. Jim L. (Psalm 73:24, 25) The more clearly we see the sovereignty of God and depend on His providential care, the less perplexed we will be by life’s calamities. He does not lead me year by year, nor even day by day; But step by step my path unfolds; my Lord directs the way. —Unknown The author and composer of “God Leads Us Along” was an obscure preacher and carpenter who spent a lifetime humbly serving God in small rural areas. Often the salary was meager and life was difficult for his family. Through it all, however, George Young and his wife never wavered in their loyalty to God and His service. The story is told that after much struggle and effort, the George Young family was finally able to move into their own small home, which they had built themselves. Their joy seemed complete. But then, while Young was away holding meetings in another area, hoodlums who disliked the preacher’s gospel message set fire to the house, leaving nothing but a heap of ashes. It is thought that out of that tragic experience, George Young completed this hymn, which reaffirms so well the words of Job 35:10: “God my Maker, who gives songs in the night.” The words of this hymn have since been a source of great comfort and encouragement to countless numbers of God’s people as they experienced the “night” times of their lives: In shady, green pastures, so rich and so sweet, God leads His dear children along; where the water’s cool flow bathes the weary one’s feet, God leads His dear children along. Sometimes on the mount where the sun shines so bright, God leads His dear children along; sometimes in the valley, in the darkest of night, God leads His dear children along. Determination Playing baseball in October is a normal part of the game for 25 year-old Derek Jeter, the All-Star shortstop of the New York Yankees. The 2001 World Series was the fifth he’s played in during his brief career. Jeter is undoubtedly one of the premier players in the game. When Jeter was still in diapers, 42 year-old Mike Morgan pitched in his first Major League game. Morgan’s played for 12 Major League teams in his 24 year career, but has never made it to the World Series, never that is until 2001. During the top of the 8th inning of game 1 of the Series, Arizona Diamondback pitcher Morgan took to the mound and retired the Yanks in order. The third batter was Jeter, who ended his 14 game World Series hitting streak when he flied out to deep centerfield. “My father taught me a lot of things, and one of them was perseverance,” Morgan said. “I’m glad he did. Because I don’t think my career would have felt complete if I didn’t make it to the World Series.” Morgan will probably never make it into the Hall of Fame, he’s lost more games than he’s won and his ERA is over 4. But after 24 years there’s something no one can take from him, the 8th inning in game 1 of the 2001 World Series, the world championship ring that is on his finger,and the perseverance that got him there. January 14 TRUSTING JESUS Edgar Page Stites, 1836–1921 Trust in the Lord, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed. Delight thyself also in the Lord; and He shall give thee the desires of thine heart. Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass. (Psalm 37:3–5 KJV) “Simply trusting every day” along a “stormy way,” “in danger” when “the path is drear” “if the way is clear”—what a valuable lesson for each of us to learn. We are so prone to look ahead in life to see how our problems will be solved or where our path will lead. We waste much time and energy in worrying instead of simply trusting, delighting, and committing our ways to the Lord. That’s how to find His strength and wisdom to face our problems and responsibilities for tomorrow and all the days ahead. Edgar Stites, an obscure but active lay worker, had learned that spiritual lesson. He discovered that “while He leads I cannot fall.” God’s way in our lives is always far superior to the path we might have chosen. The writer of “Trusting Jesus” was a faithful member of the Methodist church in Cape May, New Jersey. After serving in the Civil War, he worked as a riverboat pilot and later as a home missionary in the Dakotas. He wrote several other hymns, including the very popular “Beulah Land.” Mr. Stites’ poem first appeared in a newspaper in 1876. It was then given to evangelist D. L. Moody, who in turn asked his associate, Ira Sankey, to compose a suitable tune for the words. The hymn was widely used in the Moody-Sankey evangelistic services, and through the years Christians have responded to the implicit, child-like faith expressed so well in this simple but inspiring hymn. Details I didn’t know I’d made an irreversible mistake until about 30 minutes before we were supposed to board the plane. I looked down and noticed that I was wearing one black shoe and one brown one and immediately remembered that I didn’t pack a spare pair of shoes in my suitcase. Very early in the morning last Tuesday, I took a quick shower and got dressed in the dark so I wouldn’t wake up Susan. The night before I’d set out the suit, shirt tie and shoes I would wear on the plane and to my first meeting that was scheduled for less than an hour from when I touched down in San Diego. Picking my wardrobe was a simple process of elimination. Because the meeting was in Southern California, I’d ruled out any of my 100% wool suits for the trip and had settled on taking a three button brown linen and wool blend jacket with a pair of worsted wool tan slacks. Initially, I was going to wear a brown silk jacket, but I’d heard the night before that two button jackets were out of style, and since I’d be on stage in front of around 1000 people, I didn’t want to be out of style. After all, I wanted to make the best possible impression. In my suitcase I packed a green suit, because I knew the green would go with the brown shoes I’d be wearing and I could pack lighter and not pack a second pair of shoes if I chose green over black. I’d been rather careful, or so I thought. I called the hotel from the airport and asked them to have a shuttle prepared to take me shopping for shoes immediately when I arrived at the airport. After the nice man on the other end of the phone stopped laughing, he agreed to help. I don’t know about you, but the whole irony of the situation struck me as I waited to board the plane. Here I was careful enough to take a jacket with the right number of buttons, but was so careless that I failed to wear a matching pair of shoes. January 13 HE LEADETH ME Joseph H. Gilmore, 1834–1918 He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside quiet waters, He restores my soul. (Psalm 23:2) The blessedness and awe of being led by Almighty God Himself so impressed the author of this text that he wrote these beloved words spontaneously—and these exact words have been sung by believers around the world for more than a century. Although Joseph Gilmore became a distinguished university and seminary professor, an author of several textbooks in Hebrew and English literature, and a respected Baptist minister, he is best remembered today for this one hymn, hurriedly written when he was just 28. Gilmore scribbled down these lines while visiting with friends after preaching about the truths of the 23rd Psalm at the Wednesday evening service of the First Baptist Church in Philadelphia. He left this account: At the close of the service we adjourned to Deacon Watson’s pleasant home, where we were being entertained. During our conversation the blessedness of God’s leading so grew upon me that I took out my pencil, wrote the text just as it stands today, handed it to my wife, and thought no more of it. Without telling her husband, Mrs. Gilmore sent the verses to the Watchman and Reflector Magazine, where it first appeared the following year. Three years later Joseph Gilmore went to Rochester, New York, as a candidate to become the pastor of Second Baptist Church. Eternal Destiny Larry worked long, hard hours as the manager of a feedlot, but tried to find time to grow in his personal relationship with the Lord. After taking a four—week witnessing class at his church, he began to take a personal interest in one of his employees. One afternoon he came straight from work to meet with Ed Rowell, his pastor. “Pastor,” he said, “you need to go over to see “Bubba” today. “Why’s that?” Ed asked. “He’s in some big trouble; the police stopped by the feedlot today and said they would arrest him tomorrow. Pastor, you’ve got to go see him, he really needs the Lord.” “I’ll be glad to go with you to back you up,” Ed said, “but you will need to do the talking.” Reluctantly, Larry agreed. Ed hopped in Larry’s pickup and off they went. It was a long drive to Bubba’s trailer—about 20 miles from the church—the last five miles were a terrible dirt road. When they arrived, Ed was shocked at the living conditions. One corner of the trailer was sagging. There were old washing machines, junk cars and debris scattered all over the yard. Reluctantly, Bubba invited them in. Old, broken—down furniture flanked the walls, a single 40-watt light bulb hung from the ceiling. Ed and Larry tried to cope with the foul smell as they sank into the couch. It was an uncomfortable situation. Obviously, Bubba was embarrassed for his boss to see how he lived. Larry had a hard time getting to the point. The air was thick. Instead of rescuing Larry, Pastor Ed sat patiently as the evening unfolded. Finally, Bubba asked, “Well Larry, why did you come out here for?” That was all the prompting Larry needed. “Bubba,” Larry said, “your life’s a mess and you need the Lord!” “Not exactly the approach I taught in class,” Pastor Ed thought. After a pause, Bubba said, “you’re right—I do.” Bubba prayed to receive Christ that night. Not because of the polished approach or snazzy presentation. Bubba responded to the love of his boss and the power of the simple gospel. The prayer Bubba prayed didn’t solve all his problems, the next day, the police came to the feedlot and took him away in handcuffs. But it did settle one thing—his eternal destiny. Jim L. January 12 JESUS, SAVIOR, PILOT ME Edward Hopper, 1818–1888 Thou wilt show me the path of life. In Thy presence is fulness of joy; at Thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. (Psalm 16:11 KJV) “Lord, save us; we perish,” the disciples cried, and instantly Christ arose to rebuke the winds of the storm and calm the sea. Today’s hymn expresses in 19th century sailor’s language the universal human need for divine help. Edward Hopper, a gentle, humble man, was a Presbyterian minister with an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree. His most fruitful ministry, however, was with the sailors at the small Church of the Sea and Land in the New York harbor area, where he ministered until his death. Hopper wrote today’s text especially for the spiritual needs of these sailors from around the world; it became their favorite hymn. “Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me” uses only three of the original six verses written by Dr. Hopper. One of the omitted stanzas is an interesting reminder of our constant need for Christ even when there are no disturbing storms and life seems calm. Though the sea be smooth and bright, sparkling with the stars of night, and my ship’s path be ablaze with the light of halcyon [peaceful] days, still I know my need of Thee; Jesus, Savior, pilot me. Edward Hopper died at the age of 70 as he was sitting peacefully in his study, pencil in hand, working on a new poem about heaven. Depravity “You can keep your depravity of man,” my ethics professor said, “I don’t buy it.” He abruptly ended the discussion that afternoon, but he didn’t change my mind. You see, I wasn’t just a theology student studying at a respected seminary, I was also the father of a two-year-old at the time. Enough said? They come into the world kicking and screaming, and self absorbed. And we never once have to teach them to throw a fit. Why is that? They constantly yell “mine,” when nothing really belongs to them. We never have to tell them NOT to share—they pick that up on their own. When they’re not saying “mine,” they are yelling “NO!” Now throwing baby food across the room I understand—I wouldn’t eat that stuff either! But they also fight hot baths and squirm away from warm hugs, nothing can explain that. We spend months teaching them to go in the potty and years teaching them to read, and a lifetime teaching them to eat their veggies, but don’t have to spend a single second teaching them to disobey. Why is that? The same reason you don’t have to teach a cat to meow or a dog to bark; it is their nature. My professor? A few years later, he was fired for a morals violation. That’s why the pseudo science of astrology is booming today as never before. Because we are apprehensive of the future, wondering when some health problem or perhaps a financial difficulty will surprise us, we long for a reassuring word of comfort. “Day by Day” was written by a young Swedish woman who learned early in life the all-important lesson of living each day with the conscious presence and strength of her Lord. Lina Sandell has often been called the “Fanny Crosby of Sweden” for her many contributions to gospel hymnody. From her pen flowed approximately 650 hymns which strongly influenced the waves of revival that swept the Scandinavian countries during the latter half of the 19th century. At the age of 26 Lina had an experience that greatly influenced her life. She was accompanying her father aboard ship to the city of Gothenburg, Sweden, across Lake Vattern. The ship gave a sudden lurch and Lina’s father, a devout Lutheran minister, fell overboard and drowned before the eyes of his devoted daughter. Although Lina had written many hymn texts prior to this tragic experience, now more than ever poetic thoughts that expressed a tender, child-like trust in her Lord began to flow freely from her broken heart. Day by day and with each passing moment, strength I find to meet my trials here; trusting in my Father’s wise bestowment, I’ve no cause for worry or for fear. He whose heart is kind beyond all measure gives unto each day what He deems best—lovingly, its part of pain and pleasure, mingling toil with peace and rest. Ev’ry day the Lord Himself is near me with a special mercy for each hour; all my cares He fain would bear, and cheer me, He whose name is Counsellor and Pow’r. The protection of His child and treasure is a charge that on Himself He laid: “As thy days, thy strength shall be in measure,” this the pledge to me He made. He is Able to Deliver You While in captivity, Daniel excelled over many years and under several Kings. His success so angered the Babylonian bureaucrats that they plotted to destroy him. They searched for a character flaw in him, but couldn’t find one. Instead, they baited a trap. They convinced King Darius to sign an irrevocable law forbidding prayer to anyone but the king. Daniel’s custom was to face Jerusalem and pray three times a day. He did not change this practice when he learned of the new law. His enemies plotted and schemed and successfully caught Daniel breaking the law—they caught him in the terrible act of praying. They reported him to the King. The news deeply troubled King Darius. In a moment of vanity, he declared an irrevocable law that was about to destroy one of his closest advisors. He had no choice, he had to carry out the punishment prescribed by the law—to cast Daniel into the den of lions. The times looked bleak, but Daniel slept comfortably with the lions. When Darius asked Daniel if he was OK after spending the night with the lions, Daniel said, “My God sent his angel, and he shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in his sight. Nor have I ever done any wrong before you, O king.” (Daniel 6:22) God delivered Daniel; He was able! January 10 WHAT A FRIEND WE HAVE IN JESUS Joseph Scriven, 1819–1886 A man that hath friends must show himself friendly: And there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother. (Proverbs 18:24 KJV) A true friend loves and accepts us just as we are, stays close to us in good or in bad, and is always ready to help in time of need. Because the author of this hymn text found just such a friend in his Lord, he decided to spend his entire life showing real friendship to others. Joseph Scriven had wealth, education, a devoted family, and a pleasant life in his native Ireland. Then unexpected tragedy entered. On the night before Scriven’s scheduled wedding, his fiancée drowned. In his deep sorrow, Joseph realized that he could find the solace and support he needed only in his dearest friend, Jesus. Soon after this tragedy, Scriven dramatically changed his lifestyle. He left Ireland for Port Hope, Canada, determined to devote all of his extra time in being a friend and helper to others. He often gave away his clothing and possessions to those in need, and he worked—without pay—for anyone who needed him. Scriven became known as “the Good Samaritan of Port Hope.” When Scriven’s mother became ill in Ireland, he wrote a comforting letter to her, enclosing the words of his newly written poem with the prayer that these brief lines would remind her of a never-failing heavenly Friend. Sometime later, when Joseph Scriven himself was ill, a friend who came to call on him happened to see a copy of these words scribbled on scratch paper near his bed. The friend read the lines with interest and asked, “Who wrote those beautiful words?” “The Lord and I did it between us,” was Scriven’s reply. What a Friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer! O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear, all because we do not carry everything to God in prayer. Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere? We should never be discouraged—Take it to the Lord in prayer. Can we find a friend so faithful who will all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our every weakness—Take it to the Lord in prayer. Degrees of Sin I would rather someone be angry with me than murder me, but that doesn’t mean that anger isn’t a sin. It is. Jesus did not teach that there are any unimportant sins. On the contrary. In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus went to the heart of overt sin—He showed that it began with an attitude that needed to be changed. For instance, He said: “You have heard that the ancients were told, ‘You shall not commit murder’ and ‘Whoever commits murder shall be liable to the court.’ [22] “But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever shall say to his brother, ‘Raca,’ shall be guilty before the supreme court; and whoever shall say, ‘You fool,’ shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell.” (Matthew 5:21–22 NASB) Anger is the seed of murder, it is where it begins. It isn’t unimportant. By itself it is a terrible sin, but it has the capacity to become a worse sin, it can end in death. Jesus also said, “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery’; [28] but I say to you, that everyone who looks on a woman to lust for her has committed adultery with her already in his heart. (Matthew 5:27–28 NASB) Lust is the seed of adultery, it is where it begins. It isn’t unimportant. By itself it is a terrible sin, but it has the capacity to become a worse sin, it can lead to adultery. To Jesus, what is on the inside of a person is important. He is not saying that anger is just as bad of a sin as murder, or that lust is as bad of a sin as adultery. But He is saying that anger and lust are sins. And that a person who commits them is also a sinner just like someone who commits murder and adultery. We’re all sinners, whether the sin is great or small isn’t the issue, it is that we’ve all sinned against a holy God. It wouldn’t matter if we drowned in the ocean or in a bathtub, either way, we’d be dead. Whether our sin fills an ocean or a bathtub, we stand in need of God’s grace. Jim L. Deeds The bombing of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on September 11, 2001 is bringing the best out of most people, and the worst out of others. The rescue workers, some of whom paid the ultimate sacrifice, inspire me. Democrats and Republicans are getting along with one another, setting aside their partisan bickering to do the Nation’s work. I’ve followed politics for years, and I’ve never seen anything like it. The other day I heard a lawyer on one of the morning talk shows talk about how his firm is working pro bono to file the forms to help the victims’ families get their death certificates. I was amazed at his generosity. Not only are they not charging for their services, but they’ve set aside their paying clients to work for free. All I can say is, may God bless these generous people, and God bless America! But the tragedy is also bringing the worst out of other people. Bogus charities are surfacing trying to scam people out of their money. They are making door-to-door appeals, sending spam email messages, and calling people over the phone asking donors to give to the relief effort. They promise that the money will help the widows and orphans of the tragedy, but they don’t deliver on their promises. They line their own pockets with the money. Not only does the money not go where they say, but they are keeping legitimate charities from getting the money they need to operate. Shame on these con artists who gave their word, but didn’t back it up with action. The victims of the bombing, need action, not empty words. Jim L. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints. (Ephesians 6:18) No one is poor who can by prayer open the storehouse of God. —Louis Paul Lehman Through the ages, devout believers in Christ have recognized the necessity of maintaining an intimate relationship with God through His ordained channel of prayer. It has often been said that prayer is as basic to spiritual life as breathing is to our natural lives. It is not merely an occasional impulse to which we respond when we are in trouble; prayer is a way of life. Nevertheless, we need to set aside a special time for prayer. We need that daily “Sweet Hour of Prayer.” This song is thought to have been written in 1842 by William Walford, an obscure and blind lay preacher who was the owner of a small trinket shop in the little village of Coleshill, England. The first two stanzas of today’s hymn remind us of the blessings of prayer—relief for our troubled lives and the assurance of a God who is concerned about our every need. The final stanza anticipates the day when we will no longer need to pray, for we’ll be at home in heaven with our Lord. There is also an interesting reference in this verse to a Mount Pisgah—the place where God instructed Moses in Deuteronomy 3:27 to go and merely view the promised land since, because of disobedience, he would never be permitted to enter it. In seasons of distress and grief my soul has often found relief, and oft escaped the tempter’s snare by thy return, sweet hour of prayer. I pray and plea with the secular -- lost persons -- to have love, peace, joy and your soul saved for eternity in heaven, and your name written in the Lamb's Book will give you those promises. Then the Holy Spirit of YHWH will immediately indwell in you, and you can then communicate with YHWH through His Son Jesus in prayer. Christmas Decorations As I’m getting older, I find that I like some of the icons of the Christmas season that I once rejected. In the past, decorations and traditions seemed a bit sacrilegious to me. I thought that if I had a picture of Santa Claus in my home or if we went overboard decorating, we’d be missing the real meaning of Christmas. And I suppose that if those things were the final destination I’d have been right. Today when I see a Christmas tree, I am reminded that the first Adam took the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil from his wife and sinned against a holy God (Gen 3:6), but that the second Adam, took the fruit of that sin and bleed and died on another tree to pay the price of that sin. When I smell the scent of the evergreen, I’m reminded that the new life I enjoy because of what Jesus did on the cross gives me everlasting life (John 3:16). The ornaments hanging on the tree also remind me of what Jesus has done for me. When I see the red ones, I think about the blood of Jesus that He shed for my salvation. The silver and gold remind me of God’s blessings in my life and the candy cane reminds me that Jesus is the Good Shepherd (1 Peter 5:4). The white stripes remind me that Jesus was sinless (2 Cor. 5:21). The red stripes that he shed His blood for me (Eph 1:7). Both colors of stripes remind me that my spiritual healing comes only through His stripes (Isa 53:5). The angel on the top reminds me of my responsibility to tell the world that Jesus has come, just as the angel of old did (Luke 2:10). When I see a Santa Claus, I don’t think about the commercialism of Christmas, I think of St. Nicholas, the fourth Century Bishop who was legendary for his kindness and generosity. All of these symbols are just that-symbols. They are not intended to be our final destination, they are just signs. At our trip to the Grand Canyon this summer, we took time to pose for a family picture by the entrance sign. Why? We wanted to remember our trip, and standing by the sign seemed like a good token of the trip. Now we went beyond the grand entrance into the park and looked at the Grand Canyon-the sign wasn’t our final destination, it just pointed the way to where we were going. This Christmas, I pray that all the icons of Christmas will point you in the right direction and not be your final destination. Kevin I giggled softly and tiptoed off to my own room. Kevin's unique perspectives are often a source of amusement. But that night something else lingered long after the humor. I realized for the first time the very different world Kevin lives in. He was born 30 years ago, mentally disabled as a result of difficulties during labor. Apart from his size (he's 6-foot-2), there are few ways in which he is an adult. He reasons and communicates with the capabilities of a 7-year-old, and he always will. He will probably always believe that God lives under his bed, that Santa Claus is the one who fills the space under our tree every Christmas and that airplanes stay up in the sky because angels carry them. I remember wondering if Kevin realizes he is different. Is he ever dissatisfied with his monotonous life? Up before dawn each day, off to work at a workshop for the disabled, home to walk our cocker spaniel, return to eat his favorite macaroni-and-cheese for dinner, and later to bed. The only variation in the entire scheme is laundry, when he hovers excitedly over the washing machine like a mother with her newborn child. He does not seem dissatisfied. He lopes out to the bus every morning at 7:05, eager for a day of simple work. He wrings his hands excitedly while the water boils on the stove before dinner, and he stays up late twice a week to gather our dirty laundry for his next day's laundry chores.. And Saturdays - oh, the bliss of Saturdays! That's the day my Dad takes Kevin to the airport to have a soft drink, watch the planes land, and speculate loudly on the destination of each passenger inside. 'That one's goin' to Chi-car-go! ' Kevin shouts as he claps his hands. His anticipation is so great he can hardly sleep on Friday nights. And so goes his world of daily rituals and weekend field trips. He doesn't know what it means to be discontent. His life is simple.. He will never know the entanglements of wealth of power, and he does not care what brand of clothing he wears or what kind of food he eats. His needs have always been met, and he never worries that one day they may not be. His hands are diligent. Kevin is never so happy as when he is working. When he unloads the dishwasher or vacuums the carpet, his heart is completely in it. He does not shrink from a job when it is begun, and he does not leave a job until it is finished. But when his tasks are done, Kevin knows how to relax.. He is not obsessed with his work or the work of others. His heart is pure. He still believes everyone tells the truth, promises must be kept, and when you are wrong, you apologize instead of argue. Free from pride and unconcerned with appearances, Kevin is not afraid to cry when he is hurt, angry or sorry. He is always transparent, always sincere. And he trusts God. Not confined by intellectual reasoning, when he comes to the Lord, h e comes as a child. Kevin seems to know God - to really be friends with Him in a way that is difficult for an 'educated' person to grasp. God seems like his closest companion. In my moments of doubt and frustrations with my beliefs, I envy the security Kevin has in his simple faith. It is then that I am most willing to admit that he has some divine knowledge that rises above my mortal questions. It is then I realize that perhaps he is not the one with the handicap.. I am. My obligations, my fear, my pride, my circumstances - they all become disabilities when I do not trust them to God's care. Who knows if Kevin comprehends things I can never learn? After all, he has spent his whole life in that kind of innocence, praying after dark and soaking up the goodness and love of God. And one day, when the mysteries of heaven are opened, and we are all amazed at how close God really is to our hearts, I'll realize that God heard the simple prayers of a boy who believed that God lived under his bed. Kevin won't be surprised at all! When you receive this, say a prayer. That's all you have to do. There is nothing attached. This is powerful. Darkness September 9, 2000 was a day like any other day for Larry and Terry Singletary, Southern Baptist Missionaries to Uganda, as they drove toward Karamoja, Uganda with their two teenage children in the back seat of their car. But it wasn’t just any day. A tribal warrior stepped out of the tall grass that flanks the primitive road, and when he saw them, darted back into the cover. A few seconds later, he reappeared with an AK-47 aiming toward their car. That’s when Larry noticed a second armed man on the other side of the road. Larry slammed on the breaks, threw the gearshift in reverse, pointed the car back toward safety, and sped away. Automatic weapons blazed. One bullet lodged between Andy’s (19) and Jackie’s (15) back seat. Another one shattered Andy’s window, and shrapnel from a third lodged in Jackie’s back. As the sound of the gunfire waned, it looked like the family had escaped danger, until they heard a tire blow. Cautiously, Larry got out of the car to change the tire. In the midst of the bedlam, Jackie cried out, “They just need Jesus! They live in darkness. They don’t understand … Oh God, they just need you!” After he fixed the tire, Larry jumped in the car and sped away. Soon another tire blew and they were stranded. Patiently, they trusted in the Lord and waited for help. The Lord sent a Catholic priest who took Terry and the children into town to get a tire repaired. When they returned, Larry put the tire on the car and they headed home. They did have another blow out, but it wasn’t until they were turning into their driveway. Jackie was right, the attackers did need Jesus. She ought to know, because through this trial, she came to know the sufficiency of His grace. Jim L. January 6 AS WITH GLADNESS MEN OF OLD William C. Dix, 1837–1898 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi (Wise Men) from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the One who has been born king of the Jews? We saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him.” (Matthew 2:1, 2) The period in the church year that begins with January 6 and extends to Ash Wednesday is known as Epiphany. Epiphany marks the time that the Christ Child was revealed to the wise men in His first manifestation to the Gentiles as the Light of the whole world. It is generally believed by Bible scholars that these wise men from the East arrived approximately 2 years after the birth of Christ. The earnestness of their search, their worship and gifts, and their desire to return home to share their spiritual experience with others have much to teach us. In many churches, Epiphany is ushered in with a special week of prayer, a renewed commitment to evangelism, and a worldwide concern for missions. Epiphany should be a strong reminder to all Christians that God wants not only our worship but also our willingness to share His message with others both at home and abroad. The gospel of good news must be heard beyond the walls of our church buildings. May we be challenged to share God’s love both by word and deed with those He brings into our lives each day. As with gladness men of old did the guiding star behold—as with joy they hailed its light, leading onward, beaming bright—so, most gracious Lord, may we evermore be led to Thee. As with joyful steps they sped to that lowly manger bed, there to bend the knee before Him whom heav’n and earth adore. So may we with willing feet ever seek Thy mercy seat. Christian's should rededicate their lives to the Lord in doing more for His service; secular people should rededicate their lives in accepting Jesus through faith and genuine repenting, accepting His Son Jesus as your Lord and Savior, your sins will forgiven; then and only then, immediately, the Holy Spirit of God indwell in you and your soul will be saved, name written in the Lamb Book of Life, and heaven is your home for eternity with the Lord. Let us all renew our minds, bodies and spirit that are saved, or come to Jesus to be saved to serve God with fervency as never before, and continue our service throughout our lives. The Cure In 1879, Louis Pasteur ceased his investigation of an outbreak of chicken cholera to go on vacation. When he returned, he injected some chickens with germs that were left in some flasks while he was on vacation. The chickens didn’t get sick. Thinking the germs in the flasks had “spoiled,” he collected some fresh germs and injected them into the same chickens and some new chickens he bought at a market. All the new chickens died, while all of those injected with the “weakened cholera” survived. As he reflected on the experience, Pasteur remembered a discovery, Edward Jenner made 83 years earlier. Jenner observed that milkmaids who contracted cowpox never contracted smallpox. Seeing the cause and effect, Jenner created a vaccine using a weakened form of the cowpox to innoculate his patients against smallpox. It worked, but most scientists dismissed it as a “folk remedy.” Pasteur knew he was on to something and began a series of experiments that laid the foundation for modern studies of immunology, epidemiology and medical bacteriology. In early May of 1881, he vaccinated 25 sheep for charbon. On May 31, he infected those 25 sheep and 25 other sheep with the deadly germ. Within 2 days, all 25 of the inoculated sheep were alive, the others died. Today, the disease has another name: Anthrax. The principle is simple, exposure to a “weakened” form of germs builds an immunity to a disease—even something as potent as Anthrax. Unfortunately, the same principle works with things other than germs. Is it possible to be inoculated against the power of the Gospel by being exposed to a “weakened” form? Perhaps it is the “self-help” gospel, or the gospel of “prosperity” or the “cheap grace” that calls people to Salvation without calling them to submit to the Lordship of Jesus Christ, regardless, the weakened state of the message can inoculate hearers from the Gospel’s impact. Our message must be the biblical message of “repentance toward God and faith in our Lord Jesus.” People don’t need an inoculation—they need the cure. It is found in a firm foundation—the written revelation: “Thus saith the Lord.” In the first stanza the sure foundation of the Christian faith is established as being the Word of God. This challenging question is posed: What more can God do than provide His very Word as a completed revelation of Himself to man? The succeeding verses personalize precious promises from His Word: Verse Two—Isaiah 41:10—“Fear thou not, for I am with thee, be not dismayed, for I am thy God …” Verse Three—Isaiah 43:2—“When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee …” Verse Four—2 Corinthians 12:9—“My grace is sufficient for thee; for my strength is made perfect in weakness …” Verse Five—Hebrews 13:5—“I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee …” The authorship of the text has always been a mystery to hymnologists. Its first appearance was in 1787 in Selection of Hymns, published by Dr. John Rippon, pastor of the Carter’s Lane Baptist Church in London. He was one of the most popular and influential dissenting ministers of his time. How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord, is laid for your faith in His excellent Word! Without Jesus, your soul is lost and Hades you are bound now and in death. Jesus paid the ultimate sacrifice in His death and blood for your and my salvation, buried and rose on the third day, and is sitting at the right hand of His and our (saved) Father in heaven interceding for the saved. Come now, because your parents, friends nor any persons can save you from your sins except Jesus. Salvation is FREE, so don't worry about what others think of you. If they call you a "holy roller," tell them, "yes, and my (you) soul is in heaven and not hell. I'm an ambassador for the Lord!" Culture “I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.” (Romans 1:16 NIV) Much of the culture wars in our society, in my humble opinion represent misplaced energy. We lament that “the liberals have taken prayer and the bible out of our schools” when we should be repenting from the sin of unopened bibles and unbent knees in our own homes. Criticizing culture doesn’t advance the cause of the gospel. Other churches have reacted to the culture issue by becoming “culturally relevant.” If the venture doesn’t become an end in itself, I suppose there is nothing inherently wrong with being relevant. Not as long as we don’t lose sight of our primary goal. It is one thing for a church to be culturally relevant, but quite another to leverage culture for the gospel’s advantage. In a Leadership Journal article, Chad Hall, lead Pastor of Connection Church in Hickory, North Carolina wrote, “We believe glimpses of God can be found in culture, even those parts that are seemingly opposed to him. We envision God as similar to a great judo master, one who uses the opponent’s energy to his own advantage.” (Fall 2004, p. 42) The goal is not to get the culture as a whole to act more like Christians, or to get the church to act more like the culture as a whole, rather it is to use whatever means necessary to proclaim the gospel so that people may be radically transformed by the gospel. We use culture’s energy to our advantage, or to put it another way, we leverage culture. Paul was not ashamed of the gospel he preached it in all cultures. January 4 GUIDE ME, O THOU GREAT JEHOVAH William Williams, 1717–1791 Since You are my rock and my fortress, for the sake of Your name lead and guide me. (Psalm 31:3) The need for daily guidance is one of the believer’s greatest concerns. How easily our lives can go astray without the assurance of divine leadership. Today’s featured text is one of the great hymns of the church on this subject. It is a product of the revival movement that swept through Wales during the 18th century. This revival was led by a 24-year-old Welsh preacher, Howell Harris, who stirred the land with his fervent evangelistic preaching and his use of congregational singing. One of the lives touched by Harris’ ministry was 20-year-old William Williams. Young Williams, the son of a wealthy Welsh farmer, was preparing to become a medical doctor. But, upon hearing the stirring challenge by evangelist Howell Harris, Williams dedicated his life to God and the Christian ministry. William Williams, like Harris, decided to take all of Wales as his parish and for the next 43 years traveled 100,000 miles on horseback, preaching and singing the gospel in his native tongue. He became known as the “sweet singer of Wales.” The symbolic imagery of this hymn is drawn wholly from the Bible. The general setting is the march of the Israelites from Egypt to Canaan. Although the Israelites’ sin and unbelief kept them from their destination for 40 years, God provided for their physical needs with a new supply of manna each day. Twice during the Hebrews’ years of wandering, they became faint because of lack of water. At the command of God, Moses struck a large rock with his wooden staff. Out of it flowed-a pure, crystalline stream that preserved their lives. God also continued to guide them with a pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night. Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah, pilgrim thru this barren land; I am weak, but Thou art mighty—Hold me with Thy pow’rful hand: Bread of Heaven, Bread of Heaven, feed me till I want no more. The Cross I’m surprised at how much my views about some things have changed as I’ve aged. Particularly, I’m amazed at how much tradition has come to mean to me. I’m not alone. For Christmas Dinner this year I suggested we get a Pizza, one of our family’s favorite foods, or if we wanted to cook at home, we could make enchiladas, something we rarely eat. But my youngest son wouldn’t have it, he thought we should have ham for dinner and homemade cinnamon rolls for breakfast, a longstanding family tradition passed down from my Mom and Dad. Of course, we had cinnamon rolls for breakfast and Ham for dinner, just as he wanted. When I was a young preacher with plenty of fire in my belly, I began a personal crusade to replace the cross as the primary Christian symbol with the ancient symbol of the butterfly. The butterfly, an early Christian symbol of the resurrection, was more beautiful, in my opinion, and drew attention away from the suffering of Jesus to His greatest victory. Our living room has a dozen or so butterflies scattered throughout it, and I’ve bought Susan several pieces of jewelry with butterfly pendants. I don’t mean to suggest that I don’t still love the symbolism of the butterfly, but I’m beginning to understand why the cross is our primary symbol and why no campaign to replace it with the butterfly, or anything else will ever succeed. Yes, it is the empty tomb that gives us power and hope. But at the cross, Jesus spilt His royal, red blood for the sins of the world. It was there that He became sin, even though He knew no sin. It was at the cross where the battle lines were drawn, and He made the ultimate sacrifice. No, the cross wasn’t polished and it wasn’t made of gold. It didn’t hang around anyone’s neck, and it wasn’t bejeweled with diamonds. It was made of rough wood and was, in His day, a symbol of shame and degradation. But when He spilt His blood upon it, He changed it forevermore. It became something that refined women want to wear as jewelry. January 3 O GOD, OUR HELP IN AGES PAST Isaac Watts, 1674–1748 Lord, You have been our dwelling place throughout all generations. Before the mountains were born or You brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting You are God. (Psalm 90:1, 2) It has been wisely said that no thinking person ever regarded the beginning of a new year with indifference. Each of us faces many concerns and questions as we stand on the threshold of the unknown future. The mystery of time is the subject of this hymn text, a paraphrase of Psalm 90. The hymn is considered by many to be one of the finest ever written and perhaps the best known of the 600 hymns by Isaac Watts, often called the “father of English hymnody.” At an early age Isaac displayed unusual talent in writing poetic verse. As a young man he became increasingly concerned with the congregational singing in the English speaking churches. Only ponderous metrical psalms were used until this time. To use any words other than the actual words of Scripture would have been considered an insult to God. Challenged by his father to “write something better for us to sing,” young Watts began to create new versions of the psalms with inspiring and expressive style. Eventually, at the early age of 25, he published an important hymnal titled The Psalms of David in the Language of the New Testament. In addition to “O God, Our Help in Ages Past,” several of Watts’ other paraphrases based on psalm settings are hymn texts still widely sung today. They include such favorites as “Joy to the World,” Psalm 98; and “Jesus Shall Reign,” Psalm 72. After more than 250 years, Isaac Watts’ hymn is still a timely reminder of God’s faithfulness throughout the past and His sure promises for our future. WHAT'S ON THE OTHER SIDE? A sick man turned to his doctor as he was preparing to leave the examination room. He said, "Doctor, I am afraid to die. I need to know what to expect when I go to heaven. Please tell me what lies on the other side." The doctor wanted to offer comfort to his patient, but he didn't know what to say. Very quietly, the doctor said, "I don't know." "You don't know?! Then why do you want to go to heaven if you don't know? You, a Christian man, do not know what is on the other side?" The doctor was uneasy and was holding the handle of the door. From the other side came a sound of scratching and loud whining. As the doctor opened the door, a dog sprang into the room with his tail wagging and leaped on him with an eager show of gladness. Turning to the patient, the doctor said, "Did you notice my dog? He's never been in this room before. He didn't know what was inside. He knew nothing except that his master was here, and when the door opened he sprang in without fear. I know little of what is on the other side of death, but I do know one thing: I know my Master is there, and that is enough. And when the door opens, I shall pass through with no fear, but with gladness." It's true that while we are given a glimpse of what lies ahead, there is a great deal that we don't know and often wonder about. Will there be a literal street of gold and a gate of pearl? Highly unlikely. Those kinds of images may be helpful in understanding how precious heaven is, but they are not of much value in helping us to know exactly what it will look like. And quite frankly, it doesn't matter to me, for two reasons. First of all, I trust my heavenly Fath er to provide nothing less than the very best for His children. And secondly, as the doctor in the story above pointed out, the only thing that really matters is that we will be in the presence of God. Living in a shack in His presence would be preferable to living in a mansion apart from Him. Whatever else heaven may be, its essence is that we have the opportunity to have intimate fellowship with God. "And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, 'Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God.' " (Rev. 20:12) Recently, I read a quote that has convicted me more than anything I've heard in a long time. John Piper asked the question, “If you could have heaven, with no sickness, and with all the friends you ever had on earth, and all the food you ever liked, and all the leisure activities you ever enjoyed, and all the natural beauties you ever saw , all the physical pleasures you ever tasted, and no human conflict or any natural disasters, could you be satisfied with heaven, if Christ was not there?” It makes me wonder if we're anxious to get to heaven to have the opportunity to be with God, or if we just want to go because it's a place where we'll enjoy ourselves and have all the comforts and pleasures that we'd like to have right now. Get Creative I don’t watch a lot of television during the fall and winter, there just isn’t a lot to watch after the World Series and before Spring Training, but I have found a show that is become an addiction to me—The Discovery Channel’s Monster Garage. It is awesome. Jessie James, assembles a crew of mechanics to transform an ordinary automobile into a custom machine. They do more than trick the cars out, they literally transform them. In one episode, they made a school bus into a pontoon boat that really floated, in another they made a Limousine into a fire truck that put out a fire. Another time, they turned a Mustang into a lawn mower that cut grass at 60 miles per hour. My personal favorite was the time they turned a car into a hot air balloon. The rules are simple, the crew has seven days and $3000.00 to use to make the transformation. The automobile has to operate in its normal form and then transform into its new form. If they are successful, each of the crew gets a $3500.00 set of tools to take home with them and the satisfaction of doing the impossible. I love this show—it is awesome. Why? I’m not a mechanical person. I almost never work on my own car. I like it for the same reason I watch “This Old House,” or I used to watch Bob Ross paint every Saturday Morning on PBS. I like being around the creative process. There is something that comes alive in me when I watch other people create something. It is the same buzz I get when I am creative. Where does that yearning for being creative come from? I believe it comes from God. No, I’m not saying that God is implanting a special desire in my heart to watch Monster Garage. But I do believe that God has given us the desire to create. And I know that when I create, I feel close to Him. Because when we are creative, we are taking after our Father. Jim L. A Costly Gift 2 Samuel 24:24 (NASB) “However, the king said to Araunah, ‘No, but I will surely buy it from you for a price, for I will not offer burnt offerings to the Lord my God which cost me nothing.’ So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.” Over a decade, God called one of my best friends to go to the Mission Field. I was mad at God for calling him and mad at him for listening. He was pastor of a large, influential church about 100 miles away from where I served. He was my pastor. When I had a problem, I turned to him for counsel. If I was discouraged, I’d call him and when things were going well we celebrated together. Then God ripped him out of my life. One afternoon, before their appointment, he asked me to talk to his wife. The Mission Board was hesitant in appointing them to their assignment because his wife, though she was willing to go, had some doubts. As we began to talk, I heard God’s voice. I was tempted to encourage her doubts so I could keep my friend, but I clearly heard God say to me, “Don’t interfere with what I’m doing!” Obedient to the Lord, I fanned the embers of her faith and watched a passion to follow God’s will begin to blaze in her heart. I’ve lost my friend. He is an undercover missionary and cannot have substantial contact with religious leaders in the states. I grieve the loss, but now I feel I’ve really given something to missions. I’ve given something that has cost me something. As the Christmas Season approaches, I want to ask you, what will you give to missions this year. Can our missionaries count on your prayers? Can they count on your gifts? Can they count on you? Ever Such May it Be!” Following this greeting appeared her text, still considered to be one of the finest New Year’s prayers of consecration ever written: Another year is dawning, Dear Father, let it be, in working or in waiting another year with Thee; another year of progress, another year of praise, another year of proving Thy presence all the days. December 31 THE LORD IS KING! Freely adapted from Josiah Condor, 1789–1855 For the Lord is the great God, the great King above all gods. (Psalm 95:3) As we reflect on the joys, failures, and blessings of the past year, we can rejoice in the truth that we are personally related to the Lord Jehovah, who is king of heaven and earth and will reign forever. Some day we shall see Him and begin to enjoy His eternal presence. This vibrant hymn stirs us to praise and gratefulness for all of God’s leading in the past year. We will never “murmur at His wise decrees” if we remember His promises and reflect on how good and great He is. We are also reminded by this triumphant text that we must submit ourselves in humility to God’s will in our lives, trusting “His tender care” for us. Then we are to sing and shout His praise throughout each day! What a victorious life this suggests for us as believers as we approach another new year. The text of this fine hymn is an adaptation of one written earlier by Josiah Condor, a respected non-conformist lay preacher in the Congregational church of England. He is Able to Deliver You While in captivity, Daniel excelled over many years and under several Kings. His success so angered the Babylonian bureaucrats that they plotted to destroy him. They searched for a character flaw in him, but couldn’t find one. Instead, they baited a trap. They convinced King Darius to sign an irrevocable law forbidding prayer to anyone but the king. Daniel’s custom was to face Jerusalem and pray three times a day. He did not change this practice when he learned of the new law. His enemies plotted and schemed and successfully caught Daniel breaking the law—they caught him in the terrible act of praying. They reported him to the King. The news deeply troubled King Darius. In a moment of vanity, he declared an irrevocable law that was about to destroy one of his closest advisors. He had no choice, he had to carry out the punishment prescribed by the law—to cast Daniel into the den of lions. The times looked bleak, but Daniel slept comfortably with the lions. When Darius asked Daniel if he was OK after spending the night with the lions, Daniel said, “My God sent his angel, and he shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in his sight. Nor have I ever done any wrong before you, O king.” (Daniel 6:22) God delivered Daniel; He was able! Neither Daniel nor his friends could stop the lion’s attack, but God could, and God did. The message is simple. Even when the worse that can happen does happen, God is still God! New Year ... This is the last Friday in the year 2011. Thank and praise God for his grace and mercy allowing you to live this far and to read this writing. The next moment is not given to you, so take this moment before reading on to STOP IMMEDIATELY and thank Him. God says that "not everyone will be saved"; He would like to have everyone saved, but that is not to be. Jesus said that you should "... be prepared. For the next moment is not promise ..." Why am I writing about New Year ...? I am writing about the New Year ..., because me nor you may not make it to the last second (11:59:59) of 2011. If you're not saved by the blood of Jesus, then COME NOW WHILE YOU HAVE THE CHANCE TO HAVE YOUR SOUL SAVED FOR ETERNITY. Resolutions are made to be broken moments after they are vowed; A vow made to YHWH is for eternity even when we sin; He will not break his promise to you of forgiveness; if you make a mistake along the way; we sin daily and we--saved--have a propitiator when we ask God through Jesus to forgive us our sins. Sins when asked for forgiveness is immediately forgiven and cast away forever, never no more to be remembered. STOP LETTING SATAN BEGUILE YOU. COME NOW WHILE YOU HAVE THE CHANCE FOR YOUR SOUL SALVATION THROUGH JESUS, AND HAVE ETERNAL LIFE IN HEAVEN WHILE LIVING AND AFTER YOUR EARTHLY DEATH. December 30 JESUS SHALL REIGN Isaac Watts, 1674–1748 The Mighty One, God, the Lord, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to the place where it sets. (Psalm 50:1) The spread of Christianity has been phenomenal. In spite of cruel persecution of Christ’s followers in the first three centuries A.D. and from time to time through the years since, His kingdom has continued to spread to “realms and people of every tongue.” Periods of attack on believers have served only to increase their fervor and growth. Then in recent years, with the rapid development of technology—radio, television, gospel films, Bible translations and distributions—the preaching of the gospel has been heard by more people than ever before in the history of mankind. When this stirring hymn was written in 1719, however, the evangelical missionary movement that we know in our time had scarcely begun. In 1779 William Carey was one of the first to try to persuade Christians to carry the gospel message to heathen countries of the world. Isaac Watts was certainly quite prophetic when he paraphrased this text from Psalm 72. It is still considered one of the finest missionary hymns ever written and has been sung in countless native tongues. In the South Sea Islands in 1862, 5,000 primitive people sang this hymn as the king abolished their native laws and established a Christian constitution. It is thrilling for us to realize that the praise of Jesus, Bethlehem’s humble Babe, is continuing to spread and that some day soon His kingdom will “spread from shore to shore” and every tribe, language, people, and nation will bow down and exalt His name together. Jesus shall reign where’er the sun does his successive journeys run, His kingdom spread from shore to shore till moons shall wax and wane no more. From north to south the princes meet to pay their homage at His feet, while western empires own their Lord and savage tribes attend His word. To Him shall endless prayer be made and endless praises crown His head: His name like sweet perfume shall rise with ev’ry morning sacrifice. People and realms of ev’ry tongue dwell on His love with sweetest song, and infant voices shall proclaim their early blessings on His name. For Today: Psalm 10:16; 72; Isaiah 33:17; Zechariah 14:9; Revelation 11:15 Rejoice in the many endeavors in our day that work to spread the gospel around the world.
