July 31 Cosmic, Creation, Chaos 2 Samuel 23:1–24:25 ; Jude 1:17–25 ; Psalm 148:1–150:6 Psalm 148 is cosmic in scope and comforting in message. It’s a depiction of how Yahweh brought order to chaos in the very beginning. Yahweh put the heavens, heights, angels, hosts ( His armies ), sun, moon, stars, and waters in their place—each a sign of His rule over the universe ( Psa 148:1–5 ). Yahweh rules over the elements commonly depicted as gods in the ancient Near East ; He rules over the symbols of chaos. And this cosmic depiction is comforting. The version of the creation story we typically hear tells how things came to be, which is good. But when the story is cast like it is in Psa 148 —where we see God as ruler and Lord over chaos —the message moves beyond an intellectual knowledge. If God rules over chao s, and has since the beginning, He can bring order to the chaos in our own lives . For this reason, the psalmist praises Yahweh both for His creation and for His work i

Everlasting Father

Everlasting Father Isaiah 9:6 Excerpt ‎This Deliverer will also be called the Everlasting Father . Many people are puzzled by this title because the Messiah, God’s Son , is distinguished in the Trinity from God the Father . How can the Son be the Father ? Several things must be noted in this regard. First, the Messiah , being the second Person of the Trinity , is in His essence , God . Therefore He has all the attributes of God including eternality. Since God is One (even though He exists in three Persons ), the Messiah is God . Second, the title “Everlasting Father” is an idiom used to describe the Messiah’s relationship to time, not His relationship to the other Members of the Trinity . He is said to be everlasting, just as God ( the Father ) is called “the Ancient of Days” ( Dan. 7:9 ). The Messiah will be a “ fatherly ” Ruler . Third, perhaps Isaiah had in mind the promise to David ( 2 Sam. 7:16 ) about the “foreverness” of the kingdom which God promised would co

Altar of Burnt Offering

Altar of Burnt Offering ‎ The Israelites made daily sacrifices to Yahweh on the altar ( Ex 29:38 ). ‎Sometimes called the “Brazen Altar” ( Ex 39:39 ), “The Altar of God ” (Ps 43:4 ) or the “ Altar of the Lord ” ( Mal 2:13 ).

Lord of Hosts

Lord of Hosts Isaiah 9:7 [ Lord of Host is] a term describing all the forces that operate at God’s command throughout his whole creation (e.g., Ps. 89:6-8 ). It is an old title for God who , in the role of divine warrior, was the leader of the armies of Israel. He was believed to be enthroned upon the cherubim on the Ark of the covenant . For that reason, when the Israelites were preparing to go to war against the Philistines, they sent to the shrine at Shiloh in order to get the Ark , so that God , who was enthroned on the cherubim, might accompany them into battle, thus ensuring, they thought, their success ( 1 Sam. 4:4 ). In the nt, the term occurs in Rom. 9:29 and James 5:4 . Achtemeier, Paul J., Harper & Row and Society of Biblical Literature . Harper’s Bible dictionary 1985 : 574 . Print

Zebulun and Naphtali

Zebulun and Naphtali Isaiah 9:2 Excerpt ‎With typical Hebrew parallelism the prophet described the effect of the Messiah on this northern part of Israel. The people were in darkness ( cf . 8:22 ) and in the shadow of death. Then they  saw a great light and light...dawned on them. Matthew applied this passage to Jesus , who began His preaching and healing ministry in that region ( Matt. 4:15-16 ). The Sanhedrin

The Sanhedrin Acts 4:5-6 Excerpt ‎The next day the supreme council or Sanhedrin meets, what Luke calls the rulers, elders, and scribes ( 4:5 ). Some antecedent to this body was likely organized by Ezra after the exile ( cf . Ezra 5:5 ; Neh. 2:16 ; etc .). By Peter’s time it is modeled after the group of seventy elders who assisted Moses ( Num. 11:16–24 ; Mishnah Sanhedrin 1.1 , 6 ). This court has come to exercise wide-ranging powers, functioning as the final authority in religious matters and handling many domestic political cases as well. The high priest presides over the assembly, with former high priests, members of privileged families, and noted jurists on the court with him. In earlier days the Sanhedrin was made up chiefly of Sadducees, but around 67 b.c. Pharisees gained in power. Now both parties are found in some strength in the Sanhedrin ( cf . Acts 5:34–40 ; 23:6–10 ). ‎The present meeting seems to be a specially called one. The councillors sit in a semicircle, w

The Man is Cast Out

The Man is Cast Out Excerpt ‎The authorities had earlier asked the man for his view of Jesus . Now they do not appreciate this fuller version of that for which they had asked. They are reduced to abusing the man in terms of their theology that his blindness was caused by sin, a perspective earlier dismissed by Jesus in his conversation with the disciples ( cf . vv. 2–3 ), and they rebuke him for daring to try to teach them his theological insights. For the evangelist this man’s ability to teach the teachers would in all probability be seen as part of the fulfilment of the scripture that was cited in 6:45— ‘And they shall all be taught by God ’ ( Isa. 54:13 ). Finally, they drove him out. ἐκβάλλω, the Greek verb used here, can mean ‘to expel from a group’ and therefore takes on the force of the earlier notion of expulsion from the synagogue in v. 22 . The excommunication his parents had feared is precisely the outcome of his witness. Lincoln, Andrew T. The Gospel According to

A Translator’s Handbook on the Book of Psalms

Protect Me And Help Me Excerpt ‎In these two verses the psalmist pleads with Yahweh to rescue him from his oppressors, for he has always done what is just and right ( verse 121 ). He calls his enemies my oppressors because they persecute and mistreat him; the same verb oppress is used in verse 122b . In verse 122a the Hebrew verb form translated Be surety by rsv is a legal term describing the action of someone who makes himself responsible for another’s debts; here the term has the general sense of helping. The meaning of the line is well expressed by NJV , “Guarantee your servant’s well-being” (also njb); frcl has “Guarantee me that everything will end well.” Be surety for thy servant may also be rendered, for example, “Be my protector and helper” or simply “Protect me and help me.” For thy servant see verse 17a; for the godless see verse 51a . (It is to be noticed that in verses 121–122 there is no reference to God’s law .) Bratcher, Robert G., and William David Reybur

Faith When God is Silent

Faith When God is Silent by Laurie Short from  Finding Faith in the Dark Trust, by its very nature, must overcome distance to build its bridge. And yet that distance, when it comes to God, can just as easily produce doubt. This seems to be a risk God is willing to take. In my season of basking in the silence of God, my eyes caught a short psalm in the Bible I had never noticed before: My heart is not proud, Lord,  my eyes are not haughty; I do not concern myself with great matters or things too wonderful for me. But I have calmed and quieted myself, I am like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child I am content. Israel, put your hope in the Lord both now and forevermore. - Psalm 131 I thought about the image of a weaned child, beginning to be taught to feed on his own, and what that process feels like for a child. What that process feels like for a mom. What it would be like if the weaning never happened. Time magazine ran an article on “at

July 30 Destructive People 2 Samuel 22:1–51 ; Jude 1:1–16 ; Psalm 147:1–20 Some destructive people don’t realize the carnage they leave in their wake. Others intentionally cause rifts and pain, driven by selfish motives. Jude’s letter , which contains succinct prose, startling imagery, and a swift warning, is unlike anything we read in Scripture . The letter equipped early Christ ians to deal wisely with false teachers who had entered the church community. Today, it can provide us with wisdom to respond to some of the most difficult people and situations we encounter. The community that Jude addressed contained destructive false teachers “who pervert the grace of our God into sensuality and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ ” ( Jude 4 ). They did not respect authority, but acted out of instinct rather than conviction: “But these persons blaspheme all that they do not understand, and all that they understand by instinct like the irrational animals, by these things th

July 29 When It’s Really Urgent 2 Samuel 20:1–21:22 ; 2 Peter 3:14–18 ; Psalm 146:1–10 The urgency of God’s work is easily lost on us. But to the early church, Jesus’ return seemed imminent. We get a sense of this urgency in Peter’s second letter, where he writes that every moment between now and when Jesus returns is a moment of grace; therefore, believers must work harder than ever to bring others to Christ and grow in their relationship with Him . Peter remarks, “Therefore, dear friends, because you are waiting for [ Christ to return], make every effort to be found at peace, spotless and unblemished in him . And regard the patience of our Lord as salvation ” ( 2 Pet 3:14–15 ). God wants to see more people come to Him —that is why He has not returned. When we feel like Peter’s audience does, wondering why Jesus hasn’t returned, Peter’s explanation can help us refocus and remember that it’s not really about us; it’s about others. The Christ ian life is marked by a foc

Paul's Concern for His Own People

Paul's Concern for His Own People Excerpt ‎It is obvious that, while Paul was writing to these believers in Rome, he at the same time continually displays a great concern for his own wayward people, the people of the nation of Israel. It is clear that he also writes to help them to overcome some of their errant ideas about how a man may become righteous before God . These are ideas which actually are keeping them from receiving the righteousness which God Himself would provide . As a result, the reader can observe two elements in the book. The initial theme of the book, which continues to show up throughout the book, is directed through these saints in Rome who have believed. It concerns their own ministry which they should have among the Jews who were depending upon their own devices for salvation. … Northrup, Bernard E. Herod the Tethrarch

Herod the Tethrarch Acts 13:1 Excerpt ‎During Christ’s ministry Rome installed the tetrarch, Herod Antipas ( Mt 14:1 ; Lk 23:5–7 ) to rule the territory. He was appointed to office when 17 years old. Sepphoris was his first capital, and about a.d. 22 he built Tiberias on the shore of the Sea of Galilee as his new capital, in honor of the emperor. Elwell, Walter A., and Barry J. Beitzel. Definition of Church Administration

Definition of Church Administration Excerpt ‎Leadership and guidance in deploying the church’s limited resources for ministry are essential if there is to be optimum effectiveness. Leading the church to discover and determine its purpose and objectives is imperative. Identifying the needs of persons and designing and developing the church’s responses to these needs are vital. Relating resources appropriately is crucial. The leadership and guidance required to achieve optimum effectiveness in these facets of ministry are precisely what comprise the field and function of church administration. ‎Church administration is the leadership which equips the church to be the church and to do the work of the church. It is the guidance provided by church leaders as they lead the church to use its spiritual, human, physical, and financial resources to move the church toward reaching its objectives and fulfilling its avowed purpose. It is enabling the children of God who comprise the church

What Does our Eye See and What Does It Mean?

What Does our Eye See and What Does It Mean? Authority ( Matt. 7:1–14 ). “Do not judge” are the warning words which mark off the third section of Jesus’ guidelines for kingdom seekers . It is directed at those who see in the kingdom the right to exalt themselves above their fellow citizens, who are named “brothers” here. The first warning dealt with seeking approval of men rather than God .  The second warning dealt with having concern for the goods in this world, rather than abandoning such concerns to seek the kingdom and righteousness.  The third warning deals with relationships within the kingdom. This warning is a vital one; in human society we always go about setting up a “pecking order.” We try to settle the question of who has control or influence over another. The whole “chain of command” approach of the military and the business world reflects the concern human beings feel for authority. The right to judge another is a right which the human heart natur

Laodiceans Were  Either Hot nor Cold Excerpt ‎The city was in the southwest of Phrygia, on the river Lycus, not far from Colosse, and lying between it and Philadelphia. It was destroyed by an earthquake, a.d. 62, and rebuilt by its wealthy citizens without the help of the state [ Tacitus, Annals, 14.27 ]. This wealth (arising from the excellence of its wools) led to a self-satisfied, lukewarm state in spiritual things, as Rev 3:17 describes. See on Col 4:16 , on the Epistle which is thought to have been written to the Laodicean Church by Paul. The Church in latter times was apparently flourishing; for one of the councils at which the canon of Scripture was determined was held in Laodicea in a.d. 361. Mat Weavers at Their Lomes

Mat Weavers at Their Lomes ‎ After passing Roshpina, we halted for lunch at noon in sight of the waters of Merom, just above where the marsh of Huleh begins. There is here a Bedouin village, and the occupation of natives is mat-weaving. The rushes grow near by on the banks of the Jordan. Thus the Bedouins of the surrounding country are supplied with the mats which they use to carpet their tents of goats’ hair. In the picture we see a very primitive loom. Some of the rushes are spread on a framework above to shelter the toiler from the heat of the sun, and we see alongside the loom the rushes ready for use in the weaving of the mat. These mats are very thick and heavy and last for many years. One of the women is resting on the framework of the loom as if posing for her picture. In this view we are looking toward the east, and it is the hour of high noon. Some of the finished mats are seen lying beyond the loom. Above are the mountains. Introduction Excerpt ‎For various reasons it is highly desirable to read the Bible through from Genesis to Revelation . Thus, the Old Testament prepares for the New , a cumulative knowledge of the Bible , so valuable in education, is secured, and a true perspective of religious history and truth is obtained. One who does this reading is prepared to understand and appreciate the myriads of allusions and references to sacred literature contained in secular history, literature, art, law, and life in general. ‎Every person’s life is a success or a wreck, or something between the two, according as he does or does not govern it by the precepts of God’s Holy Word . "The way of the ungodly shall perish, but the path of the just is as a shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.” The foregoing should prove a powerful incentive to every seeker after truth to read the Bible through. … Adams, A. Your Prayer is Heard

Your Prayer is Heard Excerpt ‎What was the nature of this prayer? The Greek word (δεήσις) used here implies that some special supplication had been offered, and which the angel tells had been listened to at the throne of grace. The righteous old man had not, as some have thought, been praying for a son,—he had long resigned himself in this private sorrow to the will of his God ; but we may well suppose that on that solemn occasion he prayed the unselfish patriotic prayer that the long looked for Messiah would hasten his coming . His name John; the shortened form for Jehochanan, “the grace of Jehovah .” Under various diminutives, such as Jonah, it was a favourite Hebrew name. Spence-Jones, H. D. M., ed. St. Luke . Vol. 1 . July 28: I Will Laud Your Deeds 2 Samuel 19:1–43 ; 2 Peter 3:1–13 ; Psalm 145:1–21 I grew up in a family of stoics. Through example, my siblings and I were taught to keep our emotions to ourselves. Displays of excessive affection or sorrow were regarded with some suspicion, and this played out in our expressions of faith. Psalm 145 directly challenges such a mindset. The psalmist expresses why confessing God’s faithfulness is so important, especially to those we influence: “One generation will laud your works to another, and will declare your mighty deeds” ( Psa 145:4 ). God’s mighty deeds were His redemptive acts —especially the exodus from Egypt . His greatness ( Psa 145:6 ), His righteousness ( Psa 145:7 ), His glory , and His power ( Psa 145:11 , 12 ) were expressed. Our praise should be centered on God’s ultimate restorative work through His Son —an act that has brought us back into intimate communion with Him . We can bring our sorrows and failures to Him : “ Y

I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. 16 Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest? 17 For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified. 18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all: 19 Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue. 20 Brethr

Lesson  July 27, 2014 Seek the Good of Others 1 Corinthians 14:13-26 This treatment of the International Sunday School Lesson is written by Sam E. Stone, former editor of CHRISTIAN STANDARD . It is published in the July 20 issue of  The Lookout  magazine, and is also available online at  www.lookoutmag.com . ______ By Sam E. Stone  From the day that the church began in Jerusalem, God endowed certain members with miraculous gifts. These were needed in that day. When the apostles were filled with the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost , they began to preach in  tongues  ( Acts 2:6-11 ). These were languages that they did not know and had not studied. As they preached, the people who were gathered there from many different countries could each understand the apostolic message in their own language. J. W. McGarvey wrote, “Speaking with tongues was not an incoherent, meaningless jargon uttered by the speaker in ecstatic rhapsody, nor was it ‘spiritual language unknown
