Day 1 - Lord's Day - Sunday - Today's Scripture / Insight - ODB

Today's Scripture 1 Samuel 24:1–4 ,  14–18   ( NIV ) Insight Saul tried to kill him, threatened by David’s successes ( 1 Samuel 18:5–9 ,  30 ) and resentful of God’s blessings upon him ( vv. 10–12; 19:2, 9–11 ). Pursued by Saul, David escaped to the mountainous stronghold of En Gedi ( 23:26–29 ). In this episode, David could kill Saul but refrained because Saul was “the L ord ’s anointed” ( 24:6 ). Later, David had yet another opportunity, but he chose not to for the same reason. Since Saul was “the L ord ’s anointed,” only God Himself had the authority to take his life ( 26:9–11 ). David wouldn’t take revenge but left room for God’s judgment (see  Romans 12:19 ). By:  K. T. Sim

Day 1 - Lord's Day - Sunday - Today's Scripture Lesson - NKJV, Logos

By: Rev. Lynwood F. Mundy 1 Samuel 24:1-4, 14-18  David Spares Saul 24:1 Now it happened ( 1 Sam. 23:19, 28, 29 )  when Saul had returned from following the Philistines, that it was told him, saying, “Take note! David is in the Wilderness of En Gedi.”   2 Then Saul took three thousand chosen men from all Israel, and ( 1 Sam. 26:2; Ps. 38:12 )  went to seek David and his men on the Rocks of the Wild Goats.   3 So he came to the sheepfolds by the road, where there was a cave; and ( 1 Sam. 24:10 )  Saul went in to ( Judg. 3:24 )  attend to his needs. (( Ps. 57 :title; 142 :Ttle) David and his men were staying in the recesses of the cave.)   4 ( 1 Sam. 26:8–11 )  Then the men of David said to him, “This is the day of which the Lord said to you, ‘Behold, I will deliver your enemy into your hand, that you may do to him as it seems good to you.’ ” And David arose and secretly cut off a corner of Saul’s robe.          14       After whom has the king of Israel come out? Whom

August 22: Complaints Isaiah 44:1–45:13; Luke 17:11–18:8; Job 10:1–10 Complaining can be automatic. We complain about the weather, our children, our jobs. And we might do it for any number of reasons—even something as trivial as to keep a conversation going. Although we might complain lightly, we still betray something about our hearts. We assume that we are owed something—that we are entitled. We might readily admit this. We might freely say that this should not be our posture before people or before God. But Job challenges our stereotype of the complainer. What can we learn from his complaints? In his outcries, we find someone struggling to understand his situation before God. He prays, “My inner self loathes my life; I want to give vent to my complaint; I want to speak out of the bitterness of my inner self. I will say to God, ‘You should not condemn me; let me know why you contend against me’ ” ( Job 10:1–2 ). He repeats and recasts his elevated and prolonged complaints in su

August 22 Lesson 12 ( KJV ) A Conquering Faith Devotional Reading: John 14:15–24 Background Scripture: 1 John 4–5 1 John 4:2–3, 13–17 2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ comes in the flesh is of God: 3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world. 13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit. 14 And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world. 15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God. 16 And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love, and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him. 17 Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as

Day 7 - Sabbath - Saturday - Today's Scripture / Insight - ODB

Today's Scripture Psalm 107:1–3 ,  23–32  ( NIV ) Insight The Hebrew word  yâm,  translated “sea” in  Psalm 107:23 , occurs nearly four hundred times in the Old Testament . The root word from which  yâm  is derived means “to roar.” As is the case in  Psalm 107:23 , on many occasions, the word is used of bodies of water—seas, rivers, lakes, etc. However, biblical uses of the word  sea also aptly picture chaos—roaring, troublesome, untamed waters (see  Psalm 46:2–3 ).  Wycliffe Bible Encyclopedia  comments: “To the land-loving Hebrews the sea was a dangerous and stormy place, and it furnished an apt simile for the troubled, restless soul of the sinner ( Isaiah 57:20 ) and for the rebellious, seething nations of the world ( Daniel 7:2 ;  Matthew 13:47 ;  Revelation 13:1 ). ” With such an understanding, some Bible scholars interpret the phrase “there was no longer any sea” in  Revelation 21:1  to mean the absence of “restless godlessness.” By:  Arthur Jackson

By: Rev. Lynwood F. Mundy  Psalm 107:1-3, 23-32 Thanksgiving to the Lord For His Great Works of Deliverance 107:1 Oh, ( 1 Chr. 16:34; Ps. 106:1; Jer. 33:11 )  give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His ( Heb. same as  goodness,   vv. 8, 15, 21, 31, and  lovingkindness,   v. 43 ),  mercy endures forever . 2 Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, Whom He has redeemed from the hand of the enemy, 3 And ( Is. 43:5, 6; Jer. 29:14; 31:8–10; [ Ezek. 39:27, 28 ]  gathered out of the lands, From the east and from the west, From the north and from the south. a   1   b             23      Those who go down to the sea in ships, Who do business on great waters, 24 They see the works of the Lord, And His wonders in the deep. 25 For He commands and ( Jon. 1:4 )  raises the stormy wind, Which lifts up the waves of the sea. 26 They mount up to the heavens, They go down again to the depths; ( Ps. 22:14 )  Their soul melts because of trouble. 27 They reel to an
