‎The small village Bethany is located 3 km to the east of Jerusalem, and east of the Mount of Olives. The Arabian name El-Azariye preserves the name of Lazarus. According to an old tradition, the tomb of Lazarus and the houses of Mary and Martha as well as of Simon the Leper are supposed to be among the ruins of the Crusade period visible in the background.

Sledges were fitted with flint teeth to dehusk the grain more quickly. Other workers would turn the grain over so that it would be evenly threshed by the sledge.
