“And Amaziah said to the man of God, But what shall we do for the hundred talents which I have given to the army of Israel? And the man of God answered The Lord can give thee much more than this.”

—2 Chronicles 25:9


A fundamental question this is to the king of Judah, and it is of even more weight with the tried and tempted O Christian. To lose money is never pleasant, and when principle involves it, the flesh is not always ready to make the sacrifice. “Why lose that which may be so usefully employed? May not the truth itself be bought too dear? What shall we do without it? Remember the children and our small income!” All these things and a thousand more would tempt the Christian to put forth his hand to unrighteous gain or keep himselfut from carrying oious convictions when they involve profound loss. All men cannot view these matters in the light of faith, and even with the followers of Jesus, the doctrine of “we must live” has reasonably sufficient weight.


The Lord can give thee much more than this, which answers the anxious question satisfactorily. Our Father holds the purse strings, and what we lose for his sake, he can repay a thousand-fold. It is ours to obey his will, and we may rest assured that he will provide for us. The Lord will be no man’s debtor at the end. Saints know that a grain of heart’s-ease is of more value than a ton of gold. He who wraps a threadbare coat about a good conscience has gained a more desirable spiritual wealth than any he has lost. God’s smile and a dungeon are enough for a true heart; his frown and a palace would be hell to a gracious spirit. Let the worst come to the worst, and let all the talents go; we have not lost our treasure, for that is above, where Christ sitteth at the right hand of God. Meanwhile, even now, the Lord maketh the meek to inherit the earth, and no good thing doth he withhold from them that walk uprightly.

“Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon fought against his angels.”

—Revelation 12:7


War will always rage between the twoties until one or the other is excellent sovereign crushed. Peace between good and evil is an impossibility; the very pretense of it would, in fact, be the triumph of the powers of darkness. Michael will always fight; his holy soul is vexed with sin and will not endure it. Jesus will always be the dragon’s foe, not in a quiet sense, but actively, vigorously, with complete determination to exterminate evil. All his servants, whether angels in heaven or messengers on earth, will and must fight; they are born warriors—at the cross, they enter into a covenant never to make a truce with evil; they are a warlike company, firm in defense and fierce in attack. The duty of every soldier in the army of the Lord is daily, with all his heart, soul, and strength, to fight against the dragon.


The dragon and his angels will not decline the affray; they are incessant in their onslaughts, sparing no weapon, fair or foul. We are foolish to expect to serve God without opposition: the more zealous we are, the more sure we are to be assailed by the myrmidons of hell. The church may become slothful, but not so her great antagonist; his restless spirit never suffers the war to pause; he hates the woman’s seed and would fain devour the church if he could. The servants of Satan partake much of the old dragon’s energy and are usually an active race. War rages all around, and to dream of peace is dangerous and futile.


Glory be to God; we know the end of the war. The great dragon shall be cast out and forever destroyed, while Jesus and the one with him shall receive the crown. Let us sharpen our swords tonight and pray the Holy Spirit to nerve our arms for the conflict. Never battle so important, never crown so glorious. Every man to his post, ye warriors of the cross, and may the Lord tread Satan under your feet shortly!

November 30: Do Not Turn to Folly

2 Kings 23:28–25:30; Ephesians 6:1–24; Proverbs 9:13–18

I have a problem with criticism. Being one of the youngest in a large, opinionated family, I quickly learned how to stand up for myself and get my way as a young child. I learned to deflect teasing. I also knew I had a knack for ignoring reprimands—punishment-free (certain, inalienable rights shouldn’t be bestowed on the youngest). The louder I projected my voice, the better; the more stubborn my stance, the more respect I earned. I wish I could say it was a phase that I quickly grew out of.

When we’re challenged by others, we often interpret the wisdom offered as criticism instead. We defensively deflect feedback like beams of light, hoping they’ll land in their rightful place (our neighbor’s darkness and not our own). This type of reaction can become second nature to us. Soon, even messages in the church are meant for others: “I wish [insert person who is currently annoying us] was here. He or she really needs to hear this.”

Proverbs tells us that we don’t just deflect criticism to the detriment of others. Although we might shock people with our solid reactions or scandalize them with our biting comments, we ignore their advice to our detriment: “If you are wise, you are wise for yourself, and if you scoff, alone you shall bear it” (Prov 9:12).

Wisdom offered and received is part of God’s intention for the community. It’s a means through which God builds us up—a theme found throughout Ephesians. We don’t grow as individuals—the helpful conflict the community provides (the truth in love) helps us know ourselves better. But when we deflect criticism, we rush headlong into the peril we’ve created for ourselves. Proverbs has startling words for this type of peril. When the young man chooses to listen to the words of Folly personified, his fate is sealed: “Whoever is simple, may he turn here!” (Prov 9:16) she cries. “But he does not know that the dead are there, in the depths of Sheol are her guests” (Prov 9:18).

The next time someone offers you criticism, and you’re tempted to react, choose to examine your heart and motives. Ask God for the wisdom you need to respond to criticism offered in love.

By the grace of God, I am what I am

His grace, which was bestowed upon me, was not in vain. 1 Cor. 15:10.

The way we continually talk about our own inability is an insult to the Creator. The deploring of our own incompetence is a slander against God for having overlooked us. Get into the habit of examining the things that sound humble before men in the sight of God, and you will be amazed at how staggeringly impertinent they are. ‘Oh, I shouldn’t like to say I am sanctified; I’m not a saint.’ Say that before God, which means—‘No, Lord, You can't save and sanctify me; there are chances I have not had; so many imperfections in my brain and body; no, Lord, it isn’t possible.’ That may sound wonderfully humble before men, but it is an attitude of defiance before God.

Again, the things that sound humble before God may sound the opposite before men. To say—‘Thank God, I know I am saved and sanctified,’ is in the sight of God the acme of humility; it means you have so completely abandoned yourself to God that you know He is faithful. Never bother your head as to whether what you say sounds humble before men, but always be humble before God, and let Him be all in all.

Only one relationship matters, and that is your relationship to a personal Redeemer and Lord. Let everything else go, but maintain that at all costs, and God will fulfill His purpose through your life. One individual life may be of priceless value to God’s purpose, and yours may be that life.

These temples were reared for Him. Let Him fill them so entirely that, like the oriental temple of glass in the ancient legend, the temple shall not be seen, but only the glorious sunlight shines into it but through it, and the transparent walls are all unseen.
