Jerusalem: Pater Nostra Church

Jerusalem: Pater Nostra Church

Jerusalem. The churchyard of the Pater Noster. The church, belonging to the Sisters of the Carmelite Order, was built on the Mount of Olives over the remains of a Crusader church called the Eleona, the Greek name of the Mount of Olives. The crypt of the church is the grotto where Jesus taught his disciples the Lord’s Prayer in preparation for the coming of the Messiah. The Byzantine basilica built over the crypt by the Emperor Constantine and his mother St. Helena, was demolished in the 7th century, and the Crusader church was destroyed by Saladin’s soldiers in the 12th century. Only towards the end of the 19th century was a new church built.
