Circumcision
Circumcision is practiced by many peoples of the Near East, but not by the Greeks who were looking down on this custom as self-mutilation. Apparently the Babylonians and Assyrians did not circumcise themselves either. In Israel circumcision was executed with a sharp stone For the Israelites it became a sign of distinction from the people around them, especially in postexilic times. In Early Christianity it was intensively discussed whether Gentiles should be circumcised when they became Christians.
