Lord's Day - Excerpt / Reflect & Pray - ODB

There are many belief systems that are influencing our children. TV shows, movies, music, teachers, friends, the media—each of these carry assumptions (either obvious or under the radar) about faith that exert real influence. May we choose not to be silent. The beauty and grace we’ve experienced compel us to guide our children toward God . By:   Winn Collier Reflect & Pray Reflect on the myriad influences and messages children (or all of us) receive [on] a given day. How do these forces shape you and those you love? Dear Father , thank You for the joy and privilege to gracefully nurture children’s hearts toward You .

The quality of our voices isn’t the point, but our response to God’s sustaining goodness — a lifestyle of praise . Jesus is the only one who can free us from pervasive sin in our lives. May we learn to fix our eyes on Him , our Savior ( 12:2 ). Because the Son of God became “fully human in every way,” He knows what it’s like to be tempted—yet not sin ( 2:17–18; 4:15 ). Alone, we may be desperately entwined by our own sin, but God wants us to overcome temptation. It’s not through our own strength, but His , that we can “throw off” entangling sin and run after  His righteousness ( 1 Corinthians 10:13 ). By:   Cindy Hess Kasper Reflect & Pray What sin or sins have a strong hold on you? What can you do to gain freedom from the struggle you’re experiencing? Jesus , give me Your strength to overcome the sin in my life. Help me to trust in Your power rather than my own and lead me in the right path.

Hebrews 12 recalls a mountain “burning with fire,” where God gave Moses the Ten Commandments . That mountain terrified everyone ( vv. 18–21 ). But the writer contrasts that scene with this: “You have come to . . . Jesus the mediator of a new covenant ” ( vv. 22–24 ). Jesus — God’s very Son —made the way for us to draw near to His untamable yet loving Father . By:   Tim Gustafson Reflect & Pray How often am I tempted to think of God’s love without considering His power ? Why is His power a crucial aspect of His character ? How great to know that our all-powerful God also loves us with infinite love !

In a world of ethnic and cultural division, this is good news. Through Jesus , God is forming new humanity from every nation, tribe, and tongue ( Revelation 7:9 ). As I stood at Tate Modern, I imagined all those radios suddenly tuning to a new signal and playing the same song to all in the room: “Amazing grace, how sweet the sound.” By:   Sheridan Voysey Reflect & Pray How does your shared faith with believers of other nationalities bring you together despite your differences? How can you help create harmony? God is breaking down barriers to form new humanity.

When we realize that we’re all “sick” and in need of a doctor ( Romans 3:10 ), we can better appreciate Jesus’s willingness to eat with the “sinners and tax collectors” —us. In turn, like the health care workers in San Francisco, Jesus appointed us as His “street team” to take His saving message to others in need. By:    Kirsten Holmberg Reflect & Pray How did Jesus seek you out? To whom can you take the medicine of Jesus ? Thank You , Jesus , for meeting me in my condition.
