Pomegranates and bells
Small golden bells and woolen pomegranates alternately were attached to the hem of the robe of the High Priest. The bells were supposed to alert the cult members of the arrival of the High Priest. The pomegranates as fertility symbol of the Near East made clear that Yahweh, the God of Israel, provides fertility to man, beast and field. The pomegranates depicted here are made of metal and are part of a cult pillar.
