προσκυνέω in John 4:20-24John 4:20–24 Excerpt John 4:20–24 deals with the question of the legitimate place to worship God. Jesus declares the alternative “Jerusalem or Gerizim” posed by the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well (v. 20a, b) to be outdated (vv. 2123a, b). Though the Jews’ worship is, indeed, put before that of the Samaritans (v. 22a, b), this difference is overcome because “now” “the true worshipers worship the Father in spirit and truth” (v. 23a). This does not constitute a rejection of worship at specific places; it is not a matter of the “inwardness” of worship. “Spirit” is the opposite of “flesh,” of powerless and selfish human existence. Worship “in spirit” is worship within the liberated human situation newly disclosed by God. It happens in the “truth” that has come through Christ (1:17). Indeed, Christ is the “truth” (14:6). Respect of the LawExcerpt When a Jewish boy was three years old he was given the tasselled garment directed by the Law (Numb. 15:38–41Deut. 22:12). At five he usually began to learn portions of the Law, under his mother’s direction; these were passages written on scrolls, such as the shema or creed of Deut. 6:4, the Hallel Psalms (Ps. 114118136). When the boy was thirteen years old he wore, for the first time, the phylacteries, which the Jew always put on at the recital of the daily prayer. In the well-known and most ancient ‘Maxims of the Fathers’ (‘Pirke Avoth’), we read that, at the age of ten, a boy was to commence the study of the Mishna (the Mishna was a compilation of traditional interpretations of the Law); at eighteen he was to be instructed in the Gemara (the Gemara was a vast collection of interpretations of the Mishna. Leprosy yielded to no human remedies, but it fled at once at the Lord’s “I will.” The disease exhibited no hopeful signs or tokens of recovery, nature contributed nothing to its own healing, but the unaided word effected the entire work on the spot and for ever. The sinner is in a plight more miserable than the leper; let him imitate his example and go to Jesus, “beseeching him and kneeling down to him.” Let him exercise what little faith he has, even though it should go no further than “Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean”; and there need be no doubt as to the result of the application. But sometimes the lack of these assets allows this temptation to exert even more power over us, driving us to spend our lives chasing the higher salary, the bigger house, or the new car.
