Be Overcome of this World with the Indwelling Spirit of God in Believers of Him

By: Rev. Lynwood F. Mundy

John 1:5; 16:1-11, 33

Today's Scripture verses convey a message of Jesus to His disciples.
1. Jesus describes Himself as a "body of light in a dark world" of sin, and that "dark world" (v. 1) did not see Him as the Son of God to bring salvation to them (Jn. 3:14-17).
Jesus spoke of those things so His disciples would not be "offended" and fall away from the truth (16:1).
2. They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh (Jn. 9:2), that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service (Acts 8:1).
3. And (John 8:19; 15:21; Acts 13:27; Rom. 10:2these things will they do unto you because they have not known the Father, nor me.
4. Jesus tells them, But these things I have told you, that when [their] time comes, you may remember that I told you of them.
“And these things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you.
5. Jesus begins His preparation to His disciples of His going away from them: “But now I (John 7:33; 13:33; 14:28; 17:11go away to Him who sent Me[.] Now comes. a pondering question by Jesus in the last clause of verse 5 and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’
6. Jesus senses the sorrow being felt in His disciples heart of His going away from them. But because I have said these things to you, (Matt. 17:23; [John 16:20, 22]) sorrow has filled your heart.
7-11. Hence, Jesus prepares His disciples of the pending Holy Spirit of which He promises.
     7. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but (Acts 2:33) if I depart, I will send Him to you.
8. And when He has (Acts 1:8; 2:1–4, 37come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
9.  (Acts 2:22of sin, because they do not believe in Me;
10.  (Acts 2:32of righteousness, (John 5:32) because I go to My Father and you see Me no more;
11.  (Acts 26:18of judgment, because ([Luke 10:18]) the ruler of this world is judged.

A Threshing Floor

A Threshing Floor In the ancient world, farmers used threshing floors to separate grain from its inedible husk (chaff) by beating it with a flail or walking animals on it—sometimes while towing a threshing sledge. Sledges were fitted with flint teeth to dehusk the grain more quickly. Other workers would turn the grain over so that it would be evenly threshed by the sledge.
