Today's Scripture: Romans 3:10-18

Insight

In Romans 1:1–3:31 Paul demonstrates that all human beings are sinners. Six times in chapter 3 he emphatically uses the phrases “no one” or “not even one” to show the total sinfulness of all mankind (Romans 3:10–12). Sin rules the entire person—our words (Romans 3:13–14), works (Romans 3:15–17), and heart (Romans 3:18) condemn us. Paul concludes that “all have sinned and fall short” of God’s standards (Romans 3:23). Without the regenerating work of the Spirit, humans are incapable of having a right relationship with God. We don’t seek Him (Romans 3:11) but willfully turn against Him (Romans 3:12), for we have “no fear of God (Romans 3:18). But God, in His grace and mercy, makes sinners right with Him when we believe that Jesus sacrificed His life, shedding His blood to save us from our sins (Romans 3:24–25).

A Threshing Floor In the ancient world, farmers used threshing floors to separate grain from its inedible husk (chaff) by beating it with a flail or walking animals on it—sometimes while towing a threshing sledge. Sledges were fitted with flint teeth to dehusk the grain more quickly. Other workers would turn the grain over so that it would be evenly threshed by the sledge.
