Jerusalem-----Chapel of the Ascension-----Greek Orthodox Jerusalem. Assumption Day is celebrated in the Chapel of the Ascension by the various Christ ian communities. The Greek Orthodox bishop reads the passage from the New Testament about the Ascension . He holds in his hand a doctoral staff whose head symbolizes the Church, threatened on either side by snakes, the forces of evil. On his head is a golden mitre inlaid with precious stones with ikons of the four evangelists: St. Matthew, St. Mark, St. Luke and St. John.
