Royal Tombs in Jerusalem ‎Only kings were allowed to be buried within the cities. All the other graves had to be outside of settlements, since they were considered unclean. Two deep shafts that were damaged during quarry work already in the Roman period go through the oldest part of Jerusalem, the City of David.
