Ptolemais, Also known as Acco ‎The ancient city of Acco, modern Acre, Israel, was renamed Antiochia Ptolemais after the partition of Alexander the Great’s kingdom. The name was soon shortened to Ptolemais. The city figured prominently in the affairs of the Maccabees. Paul stopped there briefly to greet the believers on returning from his third missionary journey. The Arabs changed the city’s name back to Acco shortly after they took it from the Byzantine Empire in A.D. 638. ‎ Acts 21:7 , 1 Macc 5:15 , 22 , 1 Macc 10:1 , 39 , 57–60
