August 29 Becoming a Saved People Isaiah 60:1–62:12 ; Luke 22:63–23:25 ; Job 13:13–28 For Luke, Jesus is the fulfillment of the prophet Isaiah’s message. At the beginning of Jesus’ ministry, according to Luke, Jesus opened the Isaiah scroll in a synagogue and proclaimed that the words in Isa 61 are about Him ( Luke 4:17–19 ): “The Spirit of the Lord Yahweh is upon me, because Yahweh has anointed me, he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim release to the captives and liberation to those who are bound, to proclaim the year of Yahweh’s favor, and our God’s day of vengeance, to comfort all those in mourning” ( Isa 61:1–2 ). This moment defines what Jesus’ life would mean—and He was immediately persecuted for claiming the authority rightfully given to Him by God ( Luke 4:20–30 ). The Wilderness Exodus 3:1 Excerpt ‎The wilderness was not a wide, flat area of nothing but sand, as the word “desert” ( 3:1 TEV) may imply. Rather it was a mostly dry and barren region through which Moses was leading the flock in search of seasonal pasturage.  There would, however, be occasional patches of moisture and vegetation; but for the most part it was uncultivated. Nomads and their herds inhabited certain areas of the wilderness. In cultures where a wilderness is unknown, one may translate the term with a descriptive phrase; for example, “a dry, barren land,” “a rocky region,” “a place where people don’t settle,” “a place where no house is,” and so on. I am the Bread of Life John 6:35 Excerpt ‎This corrected two more errors in their thinking: (1) The food of which He spoke refers to a Person , not a commodity. (2) And once someone is in right relationship to Jesus , he finds a satisfaction which is everlasting, not temporal. This “I am” statement is the first in a series of momentous “I am” revelations ( cf . 8:12 ; 10:7 , 9 , 11 , 14 ; 11:25 ; 14:6 ; 15:1 , 5 ). “Bread of Life” means bread which provides life. Jesus is man’s necessary “food.” In Western culture, bread is often optional, but it was an essential staple then. Jesus promised, "He who comes to Me will never go hungry, and he who believes in Me will never be thirsty" . The “never's” are emphatic in Greek. The Function of a Name Exodus 3:14-15 Excerpt ‎The name conveys the authority of the person even when absent. To speak or act in another’s name is to participate in that person’s authority ( 1 Sam. 17:45 ; 25:9 ; Acts 4:7 ). The principle is that of prophecy and revelation ( Exod. 3:13–14 ; Deut. 18:19 ; John 5:43 ). God’s name reveals his character and salvation in which people may take refuge ( Ps. 20:1 [ MT 2 ]; cf . Isa. 25:1 ; 56:6 ); to treat God’s name as empty is to despise his person ( Exod. 20:7 ). Similarly, to act in the name of Christ is to participate in his authority ( Acts 3:6 ; 1 Cor. 5:4 ; 2 Thess. 3:6 ; Jas. 5:14 ) as well as to share in his contempt ( Luke 21:12–19 ; Acts 5:41 ). The Office of Overseer ‎The word “overseer” receives such translations as “bishop” ( KJV , ASV ), “Presiding-Officer” (TCNT), “superintendent” (Goodspeed), or “pastor” (Williams). In such passages as Acts 20:17 , 28 and Titus 1:5 , 7 the terms “elders” and “overseers” appear together to suggest that the positions are partially, if not fully, interchangeable. ‎In discussing the office of an overseer, Paul was not requesting that Timothy begin a new office in the church. Men were already functioning in the position ( Acts 14:23 ; 20:17 , 28 ). What Paul stipulated was that those appointed to the office were to possess qualifications of commitment.
