Fresh Start Devotionals

“Forever Friends” For months, I’ve been trying to find just the right gift for our 20th anniversary this May. For some reason, anniversaries in multiples of five have greater significance, and I wanted to do something really nice for Susan, but didn’t know what to do. Over Thanksgiving, I drove Susan’s folks up to Hayward, to show them the spot in the Japanese Gardens where I’d proposed to their daughter. Susan and I hadn’t been back there since that fateful day two decades ago, so it was a real treat for us to return. In the garden, we discovered monuments placed in memory of loved ones that were situated among the manicured shrubbery, flowers and water displays. The next week, I called the Hayward recreation department to find out if I could purchase a monument for them to place near the bridge where I proposed to Susan in honor of our anniversary. They agreed, and told me the price and the amount of words that could fit on the granite stone. After several drafts I settled on: Jim & Susan Wilson “Forever Friends” Married in Hayward, CA May 15, 1982 I placed the order, using the church’s address on the correspondence so that the confirmation would come to the church, not the house. Unfortunately, they took the address off of the check, not the letterhead. The confirmation letter arrived at our house while I was out of town. And of course, Susan opened the letter and found out what her gift was in advance, ruining the surprise. But I still hope she likes the gift. It is the best I could think of to express to her how I feel about our relationship. She’s the best friend I’ve ever had. I’m a blessed man to have a wife who is my “Forever Friend.” Jim L. Furnishings of the Tabernacle

Furnishings of the Tabernacle . ‎The book of Exodus details the construction of the tabernacle and its furnishings. As Yahweh’s sanctuary, the tabernacle served as God’s dwelling place among the Israelites—the expression of the covenant between Yahweh and His people ( Exod 25:8–9 ).

A Threshing Floor

A Threshing Floor In the ancient world, farmers used threshing floors to separate grain from its inedible husk (chaff) by beating it with a flail or walking animals on it—sometimes while towing a threshing sledge. Sledges were fitted with flint teeth to dehusk the grain more quickly. Other workers would turn the grain over so that it would be evenly threshed by the sledge.

Modern Mount Calvary

Modern Mount Calvary ‎Great authorities are marshaled in favor of both claimants—the church within and the mound without the walls. For a long time, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre was the only traditional spot pointed out as the place of burial. But with the growing influence of the Grotto of Jeremiah, the modern Mount Calvary, a picture of which we give, increased in favor. This whole discussion as to the place where Christ was crucified, and as to the tomb in which His body was placed, turns upon the direction which the walls about Jerusalem took at the time of the crucifixion. If the Church of the Holy Sepulchre was outside the wall at that time, as Dean Stanley thinks it might have been, the chances in favor of its being the place of crucifixion and burial are increased. If, however, the site of this church was inside the wall at that time it is sure that the place of burial and crucifixion was not there, for Christ was crucified outside of the walls of Jerusalem. And ...
