‎The Christians at Thessalonica are young in their faith. It may be that they have misunderstood something Paul wrote in his first letter. They are very excited by the hope that Jesus Christ will appear again — bringing their suffering to an end and punishing those who are ill-treating them.

‎Paul told them in his first letter that the Day of the Lord (the return of Jesus) would come with sudden destruction (1 Thessalonians 5:3). Perhaps an earthquake or some other disaster has seemed to fulfil this prophecy. Now the Thessalonians are wondering why they are still suffering persecution (1:5–7). Some of their number have reacted to the crisis by giving up work and are now making a nuisance of themselves while relying on others to support them (3:11).
