Coin of Patara

‎Patara was a maritime and commercial city on the Mediterranean coast of Lycia, near the modern town of Gelemis, Antalya Province, Turkey. St. Nicholas, on whose legend the modern Santa Claus is roughly based, was born in Patara. This coin’s obverse portrays Roman emperor Gordian III (ruled A.D. 238–244). On the reverse, the god Apollo, laurel branch in hand, stands between a crow (left) and a tripod altar on which a snake rests (right). Paul changed ships in Patara on his last trip to Jerusalem.
