At a house in Capernaum Jesus drew such a crowd that the doorway was impassable. Assessing the situation, some friends lowered a paralytic through the roof, and Jesus declared that his sins were forgiven (2:5). When the scribes accused him of blasphemy, he validated his right to forgive sins by healing the man. Jesus responded not to the paralytic’s faith but to the faith of his energetic and loving friends. His forgiveness was an act of pure grace, since the man had not asked for it.
