God’s Wrath on His Enemies

2 God is (Ex. 20:5; Josh. 24:19) jealous, and the Lord avenges;

The Lord avenges and is furious.

The Lord will take vengeance on His adversaries,

And He reserves wrath for His enemies;

3 The Lord is (Ex. 34:6, 7; Neh. 9:17; Ps. 103:8) slow to anger and [Job 9:4] great in power,

And will not at all acquit the wicked.

(Ps. 18:17) The Lord has His way

In the whirlwind and in the storm,

And the clouds are the dust of His feet.

4 (Josh. 3:15, 16; Ps. 106:9; Is. 50:2; Matt. 8:26) He rebukes the sea and makes it dry,

And dries up all the rivers.

(Is. 33:9) Bashan and Carmel wither,

And the flower of Lebanon wilts.

5 The mountains quake before Him,

The hills melt,

And the earth (Tg. burns) heaves at His presence,

Yes, the world and all who dwell in it.

6 Who can stand before His indignation?

And (Jer. 10:10; [Mal. 3:2]) who can endure the fierceness of His anger?

His fury is poured out like fire,

And the rocks are thrown down by Him.

7 (Ps. 25:8; 37:39, 40; 100:5; [Jer. 33:11]; Lam. 3:25) The Lord is good,

A stronghold in the day of trouble;

And (Ps. 1:6; John 10:14; 2 Tim. 2:19) He knows those who trust in Him.

8 But with an overflowing flood

He will make an utter end of its place,

And darkness will pursue His enemies.

9 (Ps. 2:1; Nah. 1:11) What do you ( Or devise) conspire against the Lord?

(1 Sam. 3:12) He will make an utter end of it.

Affliction will not rise up a second time.

10 For while tangled ( 2 Sam. 23:6; Mic. 7:4) like thorns,

(Is. 56:12; Nah. 3:11) And while drunken like drunkards,

(Is. 5:24; 10:17; Mal. 4:1) They shall be devoured like stubble fully dried.

11 From you comes forth one

Who plots evil against the Lord,

A (Lit. counselor of Belial) wicked counselor.

12 Thus says the Lord:

“Though they are (Or at peace or complete) safe, and likewise many,

Yet in this manner, they will be [Is. 10:16–19, 33, 34] cut down

When he passes through.

Though I have afflicted you,

I will afflict you no more;

13 For now I will break off his yoke from you,

And burst your bonds apart.”

14 The Lord has given a command concerning you:

Lit. (No more of your name shall be fruitful) “Your name shall be perpetuated no longer.

Out of the house of your gods

I will cut off the carved image and the molded image.

I will dig your ( Ezek. 32:22, 23) grave,

For you are(Nah. 3:6) vile.” ⁽Or contemptible)

15 Behold, on the mountains

The (Is. 40:9; 52:7; Rom. 10:15) feet of him who brings good tidings,

Who proclaims peace!

O Judah, keep your appointed feasts,

Perform your vows.

For the (Lit. one of Belial) wicked one shall no more pass through you;

He is (Is. 29:7, 8) utterly cut off.
