Signs on hand and forehead

The biblical commandment to carry important bible texts as a sign on hand and forehead was originally meant symbolically but became customary not later than in the 2nd century BCE. The phylacteries were  (opposite the heart) and to the forehead. 

These small leather boxes contained four biblical passages.

Exodus 13:1-16; Deut. 6:4-6; 11:13-21

Deut. 6:8; Matt. 23:5
